CLIMATE CHANGE in Spiti Valley

Spiti is a land of high terrain, and snow is Spiti’s beauty, so much so that Spiti remains almost inaccessible during its winter months due to heavy snow. But this is changing now.

While the snow melts from glaciers. It has become warmer over the last few decades and there is less snowfall. The winters have become shorter and summers longer. Unusual for a place like Spiti. It is just March, and the snow is already melted.

A report by SAC, tells us that snow cover in Spiti has reduced by 18.52%. This is very shocking. And this number is only increasing day by day.

Snow plays the most important part in the lives of the people of Spiti, and even for the rare snow leopard which is now endangered, because its habitat is depleting.
