5. Neat King Bee (Discontinued)

In this video I compare the top budget studio microphones. These budget studio microphones range in price from $80 to $130 and are the best studio microphones available at this price. These are the most popular studio microphones and are all excellent choices for home studios. These microphones are great for vocalists, podcasts, and acoustic guitars. If you’re a podcaster, singer, guitarist, these are the best cheap microphones. In this video I review the AKG P120, MXL 770, Neat King Bee, Audio Technica AT2020, Samson C01, Scarlett Solo Studio Bundle, and the AKG P220. You will find sample recordings at the end of the video.

You're the reason so many people are getting into making music and recording with quality, low-cost equipment. Never stop making videos! I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

I was a little overwhelmed picking a mic but this helped a lot. I liked the MXL 770 but could not get ahold of it due to backorders everywhere shipping to my area.. ended up with the AKG P120 as a second choice and am quite happy with it. Thanks for the concise comparison! I like your videos

I can't believe I've never heard of the MXL until today, it sounds so good!

I love the MXL 770. That mic is just beautiful sounding. I have the gold version. I remember purchasing this many years ago and it came with a secondary microphone for recording guitars. It’s a classic mic.

The key point of this video was "Buy what you can afford." I review so many mics for my budget at this point and come back Sanjay again. He says what it should have been said. Thanks again Sanjay.

Me listening to the blind test not feeling a slight change : 👁👄👁

The MXL recording blends really well in the full mix. The AKG recording needs more work on the sibilants and some more balance to blend with the music a little better.

The MXL was the one that sounded best to me. I’d be interested in a comparison with the Rode NT1A as it’s a pretty popular bundle with it’s shock mount, pop filter and XLR cable.

My favorite was the Bee the vocal was more crisp and detailed to me.

Fantastic video, so full of information, I am a 67 year old retired man in the UK, and love music, guitar, keyboards, drums, I have dabbled in them all, equally as bad on all 3 lol, I have just bought a zoom H2n Microphone, not used it yet, came with Cubase LE which is so full on, wasnt sure if I needed anything else such as audio interface etc, to be able to record myself on guitar and singing, just for me, watched 2 of your videos and really impressed by your knowledge, thanks so much for posting, from Garry in the Uk

I picked AT2020 on the blind test without a second guess. All the others sounded thin on comparison (the P120 is quite decent though). And this made me super happy, because I just ordered the superior AT2035.

King Bee sounded best to my ear on initial listening, and the Samson actually sounded pretty good on vocals. I’m suspecting my listening setup (Klipch + Denon AV in multichannel stereo mode) maybe adds some harshness and essing since my listening experience seemed to deviate quite a bit from the description of the mics you gave.

Sanjay promises, Sanjay delivers! Loved the review, I was so impressed with the MXL 770, I thought the best one was going to be the king bee, guess I was wrong. If it's not too much, would love to know your story, like how you started, what was/is your goal in music? Greetings to you and Dharti

I've just found your channel the past few weeks (looking to start recording loose ideas/covers/podcasts) and your vids have been SO helpful!!! I really appreciate the balance you bring to your reviews; showcasing each item in appropriate length, giving your honest opinion, and pointing out the good things you see in all of the products you see! Thanks for your help, and I'll be sure to point people I know towards you. Looking forward to watching vids for a long time :)

Sir, I want to record my poetry professionally. Please tell me a microphone and audio interface that gives me professional quality. But my room is not sound proof. At night, the sound of a motorcycle and barking dogs comes in my room from outside. But I also want to do a professional recording. Please tell me. My budget is arround $350

Looking to set up beginner home studio! Watched dozens of your videos, but would love some tailored advice. I'm 25, based in London UK and my budget is roughly £600 ($750) for all the hardware, but can extend to £800 ($1000). I want to make alternative-R&B but also draw from hip hop, pop, house, techno, soul, among others. Have no music training/education so need to learn some music theory and practice singing.

DAW: Already chose Ableton – bought the full Suite version.

Midi keyboard: I'm stuck between three options.
∙ Launchkey 49 MK3 – £209 / $260
∙ Keylab Essential – £175 / $220
∙ Komplete Kontrol A49 – £159 / $200
Watched your MK review – does Launchkey’s added integration with Ableton outweigh the software instrument bundles on the Keylab and KK A49? Especially with the genres I mentioned?

Audio interface: Again, stuck between three choices.
∙ M-Audio AIR 192/4 – £100 / $125
∙ Komplete Audio 2 – £100 / $125
∙ Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen – £133 / $166
Saw your 7 $100 audio interfaces review – want an interface with a direct monitoring knob/switch. I don’t play any instruments so would the AIR and Komplete 2 (or even 1) be more useful with their instrument plugins?

Headphones: think I’ll go with Beyerdynamic, but undecided between 770 and 990 – both are £109 / $135. Will be recording vocals eventually, but also want to learn how to mix and master. Therefore, would buying both be useful? Could you recommend a mic amp to power 250 ohm versions?

Microphone: been overthinking the other gear a lot so this video will help with the mic options.

I live in an apartment with Mom. Can currently dedicate > 70 hours a week to learning/making music but that might drop to 35 hours per week in coming months. Want to learn things fast but also thoroughly. Would like to have high-quality songs released by end of year.

Sorry for the essay, I know you’re a busy man. Been watching you for a few months and your videos are top notch. Will be sure to buy some MTMYL merch asap. Any advice you can give is eternally appreciated. Thanks!
