Funfact: Gibraltar is actually derived from the Arabic sentence ("jabal tarik") or Tarik's Mountain

Yes. During the battle the king was actually betrayed and part of his army didn't join the fight. The visigothic kingdom had a constant struggle and continuous internal political conflicts to take the throne (guess how many visigothic kings didn't die of old age). After that, the kingdom was not unified, so the local nobles were facing the invading force alone, that's why there wasn't much resistance and they conquered most of the Peninsula fairly quickly. Had the kingdom been more united it's very likely the invasion would have failed.

Roderic had many enemies on his own side. Many deserted during the battle. His claim to the throne was weak and there were others. The bishop Oppa made a deal with the Arabs.

Any conquest could've been stopped :

The gauls could've stopped ceasar
Darius could've listened to memnon and starved Alexander's army ...
All genghis khan's foe could've won if they had the discipline not to pursue ...
Napoleon could've have won at waterloo
If murat was leading the Vanguard ....
Hitler would've have won without opération barbarossa

And so on and so on

Interesting that prior to Arab conquest there was a Germanic Visigothic nobility in Spain settled in for 300 years. But there is very little info of remnants of that nobility post reconquista. Even the names changed Roderick became Rodrigo

Of course, if the Visigoths had not been bleeding to death in continuous civil wars, they would have been swept away. It is a historical example that unity is strength and that divide and conquer.

Yes. The Arab conquest could’ve been stopped if there was a better response from the Visigoths.

Tarik ben Zyad was a Moroccan Berber from Tangier who launched the conquest of Spain from Ksar El Seghir a coastal village about twenty kilometers North of Tangiers and landed in a small town called Tariffa.
Upon his arrival on the Spanish peninsula. He ordered the sinking of all the ships and summoned his commanders to tell them: “The sea is behind you and the enemies are in front of you, which way to run?”

Fun Fact: Tarifa was named Tarif ibn Malik one of the commander that accompanied Tariq Ibn Zayed.

Yes, if the Spanish Peninsula had the Bulgarian khan Tervel, maybe. Bulgarians stopped the biggest Muslim invasion of Europe till the Ottomans, in 717. If not for them and their khan Tervel, the European history probably wouldn't be the same today.

The presentation on this is so good! Particularly the way the sound design complements the narration!
