The Buendia reservoir in Madrid, Spain, has dropped to 22.8% of its capacity after Spain’s hottest and second driest spring since record-keeping began in 1961. The low water levels have revealed ruins of a bathhouse and a village, which were uncovered last summer, as well.

Spain is experiencing a long-term drought — overall reservoirs are at 47.4% of their capacity. 2023’s warm temperatures are a continuation of 2022’s, which was Spain’s hottest year on record.
