On Oct 16, the National Wages Council (NWC) released detailed steps to guide employers on how best to carry out pay cuts -- if necessary -- amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The main message remained clear: Temporarily cut wages to save jobs, and only retrench as a last resort. The NWC also laid out guidelines for specific groups, such as calling for special consideration for low-wage workers. Manpower Minister Josephine Teo welcomed the recommendations, saying businesses should try to retain employees, as losing talent would also hinder a firm's ability to recover from the crisis.

NWC is encouraging employers to cut wage, that is why we need independent NWC and labour union. As we know retrenchment and firing will happen no matter what they say, but now they add cutting wages to our woes.
