Here in Berlin all the hipsters are pushing up the price of the old school 10 speed road bikes. It is actually cheaper to buy a brand new bike.

I'm a serial scavenger. If I see a bike being given away I take it. When I was 16 I once found a Hercules Balmoral having rocks thrown at it by a bunch of scrotes behind the local shop. I took it home with me, they had trashed the steel wheels so i put a set of wheels with alloy rims I got given with a Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub and front Dynohub on it and used it to get me to college and work over the next ten years. It served me well. I've always had a beater bike that I wouldn't be bothered about of it got nicked. One was my pub bike, this was a ladies three speed roadster and every time I went to the pub I'd slacken off the stem quill bolt. It would still steer until you hit a bump then the stem would jar loose and the handlebars would move but not the forks. Yeah, one day I found my bike gone. Oh well no biggie it cost me nothing, I pulled it out of a skip. So i walked home on a cold winter night and came to a set of stone stairs. There was my bike at the bottom with the bars pointing a different way to the wheel surrounded by bloody hand prints plus a small pool of blood. I hope it hurt. I hope you hit every step on the way down you thieving scum. There was a small kerb just before the steps, the thief had turned the corner and bumped up the kerb causing the stem to come loose, unable to steer instead of carrying on through the turn the thief and bike had gone straight down the stairs. I tightened the bolt up and rode it home with a sense of justice in the world.

Can you emphasis the need to check a bike at such low values aren’t stolen.

Especially those on Facebook, Gumtree, Shpock are notorious for selling stolen bikes.

First rule: check every centimeter (or inch) of the frame ... because that is the only part you cannot replace

I paid $400 for a Vilano Forza 10 speed with integrated shifters. It was my first bike after knee problems plagued me with running. I used it for rides, races, and even a half Ironman after I put clipless pedals on it. Overall it was a great bike for the price, but i quickly moved up to carbon and lighter frames.

Paid $50 for a classic steel Panasonic several years back, still have it. Because of the pandemic and the renewed interest in cycling the price of used bikes has doubled here in the states. I bought an old Trek Madone and a Cervelo R3 back in March and they’re both worth around twice what I paid now. Stocks aren’t the only thing that get overpriced when the Fed starts printing money.

€14 here! It was a Batavus Sprint from the 70s that someone fixed up, never rode and wanted to get rid of (or well, his wife probably). Did some 120k+ rides on it, and that bike was a stepping stone for getting into cycling as a sport!

£40 pounds is the lowest I've ever spent on a bike, it was a beautiful old Raleigh MTB in steel with no suspension or fancy modern features like disc breaks and sealed bearings but it served me well to and from school for the following 2 years until it got replaced by an old red steel Miata I got for free and tuned up.

20 bucks for a 1993 trek 1000 it’s what got me into cycling. Still a great bike

Two or three years ago I bought a 36 year old 'Raleigh type' steel framed bike for £40, no extra charge for all the rust spots. It has a Sturmey Archer AW 3-speed internal gear hub. It's been a labour of love to get it how I want including a new saddle, wider handle bars to accommodate the new ergonomic grips, new brake cables and housing and brake blocks, a rear tyre, a new chain and sprocket for a lower gear ratio to make going up hills easier plus a couple of other bits and pieces including some tools to do the jobs. I hadn't exactly factored the extra cost involved but my main reason for buying it was that I wanted a bike that was unlikely to attract the attention of thieves and to learn how to do bike maintenance.

I purchased my first alloy frame bike online, brand new for $250.
It has since seen many upgrades to build it into a decent trekking bike. All of the skills Required came from GNC and Calvin at Park Tool videos.
Overall, I have exactly the bike I need at a bargain price!! I’m quite happy.

I bought an old Raleigh road bike from a local bike shop for $15 US. I dismantled it and sold the parts individually for over $150.
