Storm Warning! | How Ships Stay Away From Bad Weather

Ships use a system called Navtex to get weather forecasts at sea. Navtex forms part of the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress & Safety System), and is the official way for ships to receive their weather updates. In this video we take a look at Navtex, and look at what the forecast looks like. We use the UK's Shipping Forecast as our example.

For anyone who has never heard it before, the shipping forecast on the BBC is an absolute delight. It sounds like postmodern poetry, read by the smoothest voiced newsreaders available in the land.

Shipping has no part in my life whatsoever, but this channel is fascinating. Thanks for the content.

This was great to see you break down the areas around the UK. I only know my East Coast and Great Lakes in Canada regions. We also put our WX on our Continuous Marine Broadcast channel for any areas with Radio coverage.

Oh back in the day at PH? Typhoon? No problem, we'll travel still.

Hours later, capsized.

I listen to the shipping forecast if I'm struggling to get to sleep, now I'll actually understand it!

This is awesome. I was just searching for a video to give an overview on navtex and this is by far the best I've seen.

Thank you for creating this, a very informative and entertaining video as always. I really enjoy your work, your content has led me to have an ever more curious interest in anything maritime related (have recently been learning about sacrificial anodes). I'm not sure if you have time to read all of these comments, but if I think it'd be really interesting if one day you made a video about the key differences between 'coastal' and 'deep sea' vessels and procedures (please somebody correct me if I am using incorrect terminology here!).

All the best,
Charles

I thoroughly enjoyed watching your well-conceived video and learned a lot of Navtex in such a short span of time. Your very clear narration and vivid animations are par excellent, second to none, I dare say. Thank you so much.

Video Idea: How the command jobs are onboard a modern large ship. Captain, First Officer, Second Officer, and so on. What are their jobs, and who controls what?

Thank you for this video! I knew seamariners get weather of some kind of radio but didn't know what kind and the extend of the system. Very cool to see the different sea areas and stations.

Can we all just take a moment and appreciate that "pirate warnings" is part of the mandatory features that can't be disabled 😂
