Lupines and Bees...It's Complicated

Показать описание
Bees are visiting our lupines which were planted from seed last year. This video shows how the bees land on the bottom petals (sometimes called wings or sails), separate them, and rub their abdomen on the part of the flower that sticks up, referred to as the 'keel.'
The delightful background music is "Hijo #1" composed by Gerard van Duinen of La Tabù.

I will be upping my game this year and will have a fierce amount of Lupins in the garden for these guys. last summer they were bombarded with bumblers it was so amazing to see how much they use these flowers, that just so happen to be my favourites. Lupins are so stunning and so easy to grow but I might start mine early this year.

Watched a bee do this just this morning and was shocked i had never seen it before. So impressed with his video, nice work and thanks for sharing! So thrilled to've learned about this; embarrassed to admit that i also just learned that not all flowers have nectar! EEP. (Lupines offer only pollen.) Why am i doing *anything* other than observing nature? Finding it harder to answer that question lately. Wish more people would stop and look <3

What could be more great. Bees pollenate lupines, that are legume pea nitrogen soil-fixers, making more lupines that put back more nitrogen into the soil, and is the start of most wilderness cycles of restoration and maintenance.
