Here's Why Costco Really Checks Your Receipt Before You Leave

Some situations in life seem to exist for the sole purpose of making you feel guilty for no reason at all. Seeing a police car just driving behind you, or catching the teacher’s eye in an exam when you’re just looking around will do it. Sometimes, so will getting your receipt checked before you leave Costco.

After spending hours shopping, standing in massive queues, and wondering how to get everything back home, being stopped by a Costco employee who wants to check your receipt can feel odd, if not truly guilt-inducing.

Why do they do it? Here’s why Costco really checks your receipt before you leave.

Why do you think they check your receipt?

Yeah, I'm calling bullshit on this. I've had several mistakes on my receipts at Costco, not a single one was caught by an employee checking my receipt.

But getting a smiley face when you gave them your parents receipt was the best thing ever 😂

Utter BS - They’re looking for Shoplifters and NOTHING else - what an utter insult to even try and explain it as ‘Looking out for the customer’ - Total Bollocks!😡

I’m offended this video even exists lol... yeah right.. I’ve been overcharged multiple times at Costco and I caught it!! The only thing the greeters are checking for is to make sure I didn’t steal anything

Hahaha, judging from the top comments, this video totally backfired. I am a frequent customer, but Costco went overboard on PR with this one.

I use to work at Costco and this was part of my job. It is basically to check if you are shop lifting. We were told to look for the most expensive items in the cart then check for it on the receipt.
Costco also hires undercover security that walk around the store pretending they are customers to watch for shop lifters. It’s amazing how many people got caught!

They're looking for shoplifters. You can at least be honest about it.

As an ex-Costco worker, this video is completely bs. The employee's are looking for stolen goods. They look at the most expensive items on the receipt to make sure the carts match the receipt.

There's two reasons they check your receipt at the door. First, because items are not bagged, they can't tell if you went through checkout or not, and they can't keep track of every person in the store. You could simply just walk out with the cart. Second, and I suspect this is the more important one, to mark your receipt. If receipts were not marked, you could walk back in within minutes, hand it to a second shopper with a second cart full of merchandise and show the same receipt again, and again, and again.

Impossible. There is no way they can count the items that fast.

Its a gimmick.

I think they are also making sure that you can't use the same receipt Again by going outside loading stuff into your car then coming back inside and using that receipt again a second time. That's why they put that Mark across it. Given the number of items that some people have there is no way that they are actually checking items against the receipt. Probably only if someone has a really big ticket item

That's BS !!! It's for checking to see if you're stealing and that's all !!!

They check and mark your receipt so you can’t go back in the store and steal the same items and reuse the receipt.

Wrong. When I go to Costco, I see them looking at the total number of items on the receipt, then counting what's in the cart.

Total BS. They just want to make sure that you don't have something large in your cart that doesn't show on your receipt. They're checking to make sure that you're not a thief. They do not trust their customers.
