How often should you prune your citrus tree? | Citrus | Gardening Australia

Tino looks at pruning citrus trees - how often and when.

In winter, Tino will trim off low growth from around the trunk of the tree - thin suckers and wispy stems. - to create a good airflow.

In summer he prunes out the centre of the tree and prunes to shape.
Six months ago he took out the tops of the main branches of a citrus in the patch and the regrowth is now thick and healthy.

Now it’s autumn he will thin that back to keep a good airflow. He removes a lot of the whippy new growth and leaves the thicker bits and branches that provide the best shape.

Thanks for the tip. I was just looking at my orange tree earlier while watering the garden. I missed my usual summer pruning this time but there's a bit that was sticking out and needs reshaping before the cold weather arrives. I will do it in the morning....ta! :)

I suppose it's hard to give a quick answer for everyone around the country, but my lemon tree has put on growth this autumn/summer end after two months of doing nothing. Now I'm not sure whether to prune back for the winter. It's an advanced tree probably 3 years old that's been in the ground for 5 months now. So I think I should be pruning to primarily shape the tree but also keep it well ventilated. However I'm reluctant to do anything to it until spring to let it properly establish. Anyone got any advice? TIA. Location is Adelaide.

Nonsense. Prune whenever it's convenient. It won't make any difference in the long run.
