Istvaan III was basically a Loyalist victory. They inflicted significant losses on the Traitor forces and tied them there for long enough so the word could get to Terra

The fact the loyalists held out against their primarchs alone spoke volumes of what their legions truely lost. Heros one and all and legends till the end.

I believe it actually took 2 months for Horus to finally defeat the surviving loyalists being led by Garviel and Tarvitz. Mostly thanks to Tarvitz the survivors were able to turn the battle into a grueling guerilla war that cost the traitors dearly.

I've always believed this was actually the battle that lost Horus the Heresy.
