I love this because it would give some practicality to chain armor, letting you move faster while still having some defense

Armor originally had weight, it's just that Steve can easily wear it with his super human strength

Actually weight doesn’t increase falling speed, air resistance does 🤓

I do like the idea of different armours having unique functions, that way there could be more variety in PVP (leather boots with snow and gold armour w piglins already show bits of this)
