'Dream' by Jake Chudnow [HD]

Asleep, dreaming, on a wintry night in 2011, bundled up in the bed of my Brooklyn apartment.

That's when and where I made this song. I remembered the soundtrack to my dream so vividly that when I woke up in the middle of the night, I got out of bed to recreate what was to become the beginnings of "Dream." It makes me wonder what buried corner of consciousness that melody came from, and why these sort of things come to people while they sleep. This isn't the first time I've dreamed of a melody and turned it into a song later. I guess it's not totally crazy that we can dream music though: where do melodies come from while we're awake anyway? I'd bet it's the same place.

As for this piece, I recently stumbled across the original music files and decided to build on that 3am stream of consciousness to finish it here, one year later.

This and many others like it from Jake Chudnow honestly are pieces of art. Each one brings a feeling different from the others, some indescribable. Honestly there isn't a Jake song I don't like. I thank Jake for making these great pieces and VSauce for being the one to introduce these songs to me.

It's kind of awesome I have never written a poem in my life and last night after finishing homework at 2:00AM I just thought about the Vsauce music I listened to this and whilst attempting to sleep and i just had a weird storm of words brewing in my head because this song had me in a bit of a trance I wrote a whole paragraph it felt so complete I've literally never written anything worth keeping and this song made me pour my heart out.

Some years ago I went to live in Montréal for 3 months, and it was one of the most emotionally intense experiences of my life. I used to listen to Carlin Dream and Going Down all the time there. Now this song carries such deep emotions to me that, quite oddly, it has become difficult for me to listen to it, it's just automatic, I think of everything I went through in that trip, and I am overwhelmed with a feeling of nostalgia, I just have to pause or skip it, which is a shame, since it's such a beautiful piece.

Jake, your music is powerful, never stop making it, cheers from a fellow musician.

It takes a lot of talent to make a song that makes someone feel something. It takes a person who is truly gifted to create music that trancends words. Jake Chudnow has to be the best musical composer of our century, because he invokes a feeling in us that cant be worded properly. Songs like this make me feel curious, joyful, and even exited whilst also having equal parts existentialism, nihilism, and numbness. This much diversity in one's works should be appreciated much more than it currently is. So thank you, Jake Chudnow, for inspiring and for creating art.
