RIP: MY EXCEL VBA CAREER (2008-2024)

“If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take gets us to the wrong place faster.” I love this quote from Stephen R. Covey which, I think, captures so much of what’s important about your career – and life in general!

🔥FREE EXCEL COURSE: 30 DAY EXCEL ANALYST PLAYLIST

But, let’s quickly apply it to your Excel learning. There’s so much stuff to learn in Excel these days – formulae, Power Query, pivot tables … and perhaps VBA? You couldn’t possibly learn it all (personally my ability across just the above areas is ‘uneven’, to say the least!) To ignore this question is to waste your valuable time and resources. Is YOUR ladder learning up against the right wall, and how would you even know?!

🔥POWER AUTOMATE FOR BEGINNERS

So, if you’re a manager putting together a team, a mid-career professional looking to ‘skill up’, or a student embarking on an analytical career, what Excel-related tools should you actually learn?

In this video, I share the exact Excel and Excel-related tools I’m using in 2024 to deliver value for real-world customers, from ‘one-person-band’ type setups to household name global corporations. I show you what managers are trying to do in Excel, how to identify different applications of Excel and, crucially, how to select the best tool for your specific situation.

🔥EXCEL POWER QUERY FOR BEGINNERS

There’s no point learning more Excel formulae if you’re looking to automate a process. As I write, I note a big creator has just released a video about a new formula with a claim it will 'change everything'. Will it? I would suggest you can only achieve fundamental change by properly understanding ... the fundamentals. Yes, you might not need MORE Excel formulae!

I also discuss the role of Excel VBA in my day-to-day analytical work. I’ve invested huge amounts of time in VBA over the years – learning, content creation and, of course, consulting to organisations. But, is VBA now dead? And what place should it occupy in your analytical toolkit – if it should it be there at all?

🔥EXCEL VBA FOR BEGINNERS

You should leave this video with a strong sense of where your personal emphasis should be – and, hopefully some motivation to move more effectively towards your Excel success! I include links to beginner videos to help you ‘balance out’ your toolkit, should you sense it isn’t configured optimally for what you are trying to do. I know mine wasn’t at the start of this year …

I’d love to hear what you make of the video – let me know in the YouTube comments! I’ll get back to you there.

Thank you for your wonderful webinars on VBA. VBA is wonderful for making spreadsheets work for users who are not as tech-savvy.

I rely heavily on VBA. Be it in Excel or Outlook. Data acquisition from CSV files and preparing to be used in PowerPivot. Or writing code in Outlook to get ALL emails address received in the last 12 months - and this code is then circulated among the sales team and returns excel files from the team - helps in harvesting email addresses which can create a accurate marketing email database. I can go on with lot of examples which VBA can do and no other tool can replace it currently. And my codes are from past 20 years running still. So lot of time saved in automating rather than writing code every time the software changes.

I do not use VBA for data clearing, I have been always using PQ. BUT, recently I was in need to automate creating multiple spreadsheets from one, saving it to a folder etc. VBA both in Excel and Outlook literally saved me! I now have the e-mail with attachment ready with 2 clicks on Excel and 2 clicks on Outlook (still thinking ot is too many lol).

Thank you. Many individuals heavily rely on Excel formulas but encounter difficulties with data conversion. My expertise lies in VBA and Power Query (PQ). I extensively utilize PQ as it is an exceptional tool for data cleansing and consolidation.

One of the best tools I have found for data exploration and cleansing is filters. You can find miss-spellings, cities which do not belong with regions / states, numerals which are text instead of numbers, etc. And adding subtotals with filters is great for data analysis.

Excel is sufficient for my needs because it is available offline. Living in Pakistan, we frequently experience internet issues, so I often have to rely on Excel rather than Google Sheets.

All said and done correctly my friend. I am currently learning VBA, watching your 30Days + any beginners stuff, and I have a phrase also to share -

"Humans had always been creating their own prisons! "

I need VBA to automate stuff in my work, since I deal with unbearable workload, and our IT guys from abroad have locked any VBA related stuff, Power Automate is forbidden, Office Scripts are forbidden, just because a colleague once in Portugal, opened a silly email with a PDF attachment and was hacked!

Multinational company locking Microsoft Ecosystem tools is REALLY STUPID! especially when the company's ERP is MS NAV.

What can I say - stupidity can't be corrected even with VBA...🤣

To be honest on daily basis I work with Share Point but it often gets bug and sometimes I can't save my latest version of the file. And also I found Excel easier when I open it on the Desktop version. Another limitation is when you work in cloud, all your moves are saved automatically, the desktop version you have a choice. But I liked the video! Thank you for all your lessons!

Great video. Yes there is urgent need to filter out noise and stop wasting time on non required learning and focus more on the required skills. There are thousands of programming softwares and wasting time to learn each and every nuance can just keep you busy and frustrated as you don’t have to apply in practical everything you see on the net. Just focus on important skills and programs and apply in your job. Better to practice one move 1000 times rather than 1000 moves one time.
