I kind of interpreted Cruel Summer to be about having to hide this new relationship, that started out as a friendship. The cruel part is having to hide the relationship and sneak around. Read the full lyrics. It's from the Album lover and that is mostly about Joe..reputation addresses the tabloids/haters/west fued. "I don't wanna keep secrets just to keep you" "you'll say we'll just screw it up in these trying times, we're not trying " "snuck through the garden gate" these lyrics don't sound like tabloid drama and him being there for her during hard times. Just sounds like the beginning of a rocky relationship. May be wrong but that's my take on it. Plus this album was released in 2019 (written in 2018-2019) not 2016 like the video keeps referencing when all this drama was taking place.

Edit. So we shouldn't be upset she's in a new relationship that she can be more open with her fans about. She loves sharing stuff with us.
