As Mazda continues to tease us about the Iconic SP, I started to wonder just how they plan to use the rotary technology..well, here’s their plan. Do you like it and more importantly, do you think it’ll be successful?

People miss the point, that "generator " has years of OEM research and development, what we can get from it is better rotor design, better seals etc. we could get lots of new parts straight from mazda that could be potentially adopted to older rotaries.

The problem with rotary engine is that they hate variable speed unless it is driven like a race car

I just hope they start minting new rotary engines again. Finding a good 12a is near impossible and the 13Bs are all stupid expensive. Even used RX8s are going up in price now.

That would lowkey suck if its used as a generator, instead of the engine being used for the entire thing

This thing looks like it’ll come with 400z pricing

there are three rotary engine patents planned, one of which is the generator, one is paired with a plug-in hybrid system, and one is the main powerplant with a transmission mounted hybrid

Someone is swapping that generator week 1

Sports cars back in the day: super fun, bare bones, very affordable!
Sports cars now days: super fun, full of features, luxury car prices marked up more by the

IMO This is what will kill car culture. Those used 90's cars are getting expensive because of this.

I'm gonna lean towards "no." Remember when Mazda teased us with their straight 6 that they swore would go into the revived Mazda6?

id like it better if it was like a hybrid with the engine and mottor both going to the wheels, so you can put the turbo on the rotary for power

Hope it will be similar. The propulsion system doesn't bother me if it still brap. But I hope it will be a Rx and not a fat Miata.

A bridgeported generator sounds pretty wild if you ask me.

I see people ripping out the EV gear and adapting that 2 rotor generator into the main source of power, ergo the rx7 successor we all want but definitely won't get OEM.

in my eyes it would be incredibly capable either way it goes

unless they got some issues such as reliability and fuel economy figured out with the rotary (and also avoided another rx7 situation where basic tasks are made difficult) an EV is the best way to go

Yes!!! A series EV with a quiet twin rotary!! I love this idea.

what I wish is the rotor to act like charger for low speed driving, and changed to drive tyre directly when in high speed, keeping rpm stable and instant power in all rpm range

As much as I love the rx7 and rx8 for that matter. I would not like to see a Dorrito engine . There is a reason why the rx7 and rx8 are rarely seen on the road . If this beautiful car made it into production it would be a shame to be on a shop lift more than on the road. I would suggest engine options if the enthusiasts absolutely need a rotary motor. As long as it's not full electric take my money.

It better have an engine and a 5 speed manual transmission as a base requirement.

What we deserve is a mild hybrid turbo twin rotor
What we’ll get is probably a full hybrid two rotor

I do like the rotary engine as a generator. It will run at constant revs, so they can make it way more reliable than the rotaries used in the rx7 and rx8 which had problems. Its also a compact design, ideal for this small car.
