Keir Starmer promises new 'state owned' energy company if Labour is elected

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has announced Labour's intention to create a state-owned energy company should his party win the next general election.

His comments came at the Labour party conference in Liverpool on Tuesday (27 September).

I've never been a fan of Starmer, or the labour party, but something has to got to change. Why are the government not taxing the profits of energy companies to support hard working families in the UK? Why are companies like Amazon Et Al not paying any taxes at all, while the high street is slowly eroded away into obscurity. Why are people simply allowing this to happen pretty much unchecked? Perhaps it is actually time to have a change and see what another party can do? I don't think the answer is cutting taxes. I think the answer is actually raising them, to stop the top of the capitalist pile from bleeding the rest of us dry. Tax the big corporations, go after white collar crime and fraud, and stop with this trickle down nonsense that is going to bankrupt so many hard working people and small businesses. Small businesses are valuable, we pay tax! If were all gone, then guess what? No tax from us anyway. It's got to change.

I've been posting this needs doing for years, it's been one of my hobby horses. Unless you privatise the whole lot, which could be expensive and litigious, then the way to bring the energy sector to heel is to put a new national energy company in among the Big 6, to regulate their prices from within. Pensioners receiving winter fuel allowance could be switched to the new national concern so that this money goes towards providing them with as much heat as possible and doesn't simply line the pockets of shareholders as dividends. The government's buying power will help secure better wholesale deals, for the entire energy industry, and never again will the country be lied to about the procurement costs (as has happened) because the government will be an expert on the situation. Regulate From Within.
