Going out on a limb by saying Hendrix had no idea that in 50 years people would perform psychoanalysis on the note he hits when he broke a string, but we’re all here for it.

50 plus years later and Jimi still confounds. Nice work Tim.

Was at the show, 1/1/70. Five of us went down to the
fillmore. Got single tickets in seperate rows nothing worse than 15th row center. Watched Jimi go off stage, change the string and walked back on tuning his guitar. Who Knows and Machine Gun wrere on the original Band of Gypsys album. I got listen to the whole show on Songs For Groovy Children 5 CD set. Still gives me chills knowingI was there. Just another of many great show I saw at the Fillmore.

I was at the show, Jimi breaks the string, I remember hime stepping back out of the light, the guitar is restrung, he steps back into the blue light and just kills it. Love you Jimi...

I think The Band of Gypsys is Jimi's finest hour. I too remember that day when me, brothers and neighborhood kids were outside when my mom opened the dining room window to tell my brother that Jimi Hendrix had died. I was only six y/o but that's one moment that's always stuck with me. Not sure why. As always great stuff Tim.

400 times when a teenager? I did too, Tim. I've been a Hendrix man since April '68 when I saw him live in Virginia Beach. He was irreplaceable. One of the greatest rock albums ever recorded. I hold Frank Marino's 2019 concert at the Agora Theater in 2nd place.

Wow. I can't count how many times I've listened to this album and never knew there was a string break. Cheers Tim.

Band of Gypsies is an astonishing album. In my humble opinion it is the greatest live album of all.

Missed the livestream, I forgot how good Band Of Gypsys is. You totally nailed the "Who Knows" sound in the intro, gave me goosebumps!

I'm using a Fulltone Deja Vibe MK II for a Hendrix tone. I love it. Tim is a national treasure and not only has the skill set to break down tone he can play about anything. Effects are a black hole, so it really helps to have expert advice on what does what.

Tim, Its really great to hear someone like you saying what you said about the Band of Gypsies album. I also think this was Jimis best performance ever. In fact I think its the best live performance ever by any guitar player. I think you have to be a player to understand just how unbelievable it was.

What a great sound Tim. Nile Rodgers was at the BoG concerts, how mad. If I could go back in time to any concert, it would be this one.

Great playing as usual and BOG is a real fav of mine. And I did not know about Hendrix’s breaking a string on Who Knows, which IMO, gave us one of the most iconic parts in rock history. Love Buddy’s singing and scat vamp!

If you love that album, check out the rest of those concerts (4 in total) called "Live At The Fillmore East" released as a double album by his estate in the late 90s/early 2000s.

I'm glad you told the story of the album. Hendrixs 1969 was a turbulent one, as I'm sure you're aware. These concerts were almost cathartic in nature.

It's just a damn shame what happened at MSG 31/01/1970, which led to the break up of that band.

As for my favourite Hendrix concert. It is Monterrey Pop 1967. I just love the energy he brought that night, everything so new and exciting.

(BTW legend goes Bill Graham goaded Hendrix into playing without "the gimmicks" hence his performance on the 2nd show, just standing still and playing.)

I only saw Hendrix play once accidentally when I was 10 years old at Cincinnati Xavier University, but it was enough to inspire me to start playing electric guitar. Anyway, I think the Berkeley live recordings are as noteworthy as the BOG live.

There’s the best of the best and then there’s the rest. For all the guitarists who are up there- Beck, Clapton, Gilmour, Page, Santana, Knopfler etc - it’s Hendrix and then daylight. Astonishing to think of the time, mid/late 60s when Hendrix arrived. As the human race we won’t experience that again until aliens arrive.

I was a junior in high school 1967/68? on a date to see Jimi Hendrix. and the front band Cream. in Dallas. This was the first time I actually saw hippies at a concert.. They were people with ragged jeans and barefooted, I wasn't horrified. I was intrigued! And sure enough, I was soon to follow that stylish trend.. but getting back to Jimi, there was a wall and I mean a wall of stacked Marshall amps across the stage So cream came out and did their thing. Playing sunshine of your love Etcetera which in itself was incredible. Then afterwards, Jimi finally comes out with the guys. and as he proceeds to go into this first number. he stops.. Apparently he's hearing noise in the background and. in taking a mic back there we all realized they were picking up the control tower from Love Field Airport ! It took them awhile, but they got the issue corrected. I just. wonder if the control tower would have heard Jimi once he cranked it up. I'll never forget that concert.. Within the next month, I saw the Doors and Led Zeppelin on their first American tour In Dallas. Those were the days buddy! I'm now 72 and play guitar every day !!!

Got that album when I was about 14 years old, it blew my mind. I had Are You Experienced, Electric Lady Land and the Woodstock album. Maybe because he was playing with the Gypsys and it breathed new music and he wasn't playing a lot of the old tunes. I'm a bass player but it just blew me away.
