AMISH COUNTRY PA (DUTCH COUNTRY) - RV TRIP
Fifty miles west of Philadelphia is a beautiful region of rolling hills, neatly cultivated farms, covered bridges, and towns with picturesque names like Paradise and Bird-in-Hand. This is the gorgeous Amish Country, also known as Pennsylvania Dutch Country, an area of 7,100 square miles centered in Lancaster County, which is an easy day trip or overnight excursion from Center City Philadelphia. Made even more famous in the Harrison Ford film Witness, the Amish, Mennonites, and Brethren of Dutch Country represent over 75,000 of Lancaster County's 500,000 residents. It's a small group that continues to live a gentle lifestyle centered on family cohesiveness and religious worship. The Pennsylvania Dutch evokes feelings of nostalgia, respect, and curiosity. The community is of mostly German descent, though that description isn't restricted to "Plain People." Pennsylvania Dutch Country offers agreeably varied pleasures to visitors. The verdant countryside is laced with rural roads for tranquil driving or cycling. You'll find opportunities to meet Amish and Mennonites on farms that have opened their quaint doors for commerce. Tourism trade has actually promoted continued excellence in quilt and furniture making, and crafts. There are historical sites, pretzel and chocolate factories, covered bridges, and bustling farmers' markets, plus modern diversions like movie theaters, amusement parks, and great outlet-mall shopping. And, of course, Pennsylvania Dutch smorgasbord and family-style restaurants are unique, all-you-can-eat experiences. A Note on Etiquette; There aren't too many settings in the world where an entire native population is a tourist attraction. Kitchen Kettle Village showcases all that Lancaster County has to offer — homemade baked goods, jams and relishes, good food with unexpected touches and charming one-of-a-kind overnight lodging in a picturesque countryside. We're also famous for our unique shopping experience, featuring 40 distinct merchants offering everything from locally-made art, pottery and PA Dutch quilts to name-brand favorites like Brighton, PANDORA Jewelry, UGG and Minnetonka moccasins. Herr's Mill; In the early 18th century, Herr's Mill was an important neighborhood center. Not only was it a place to stop between trips, but it was also a place to purchase supplies and exchange news for locals and visitors alike. The Mill and the Village functioned throughout the 1800's and into the turn of the century. 1929 was the last year the Mill operated. Come see Mill Bridge Camp Resort, Take A Step Back In Time. Imagine a long journey west in a Conestoga Wagon, transporting corn to be ground at the mill. Your wagon approaches its destination -- 1738 Herr's Grist Mill and the 1844 Covered Bridge (longest in Lancaster County). Mill Bridge Camp Resort is home to these two registered historic landmarks. Enjoy a tour along Herr's 180 foot long double arched covered bridge, the longest in Lancaster County. The Mill. This 1738 water-driven grist mill is the reason for this village. When John Herr settled here, he chose this land by the Pequea Creek to build his mill, which was, and still is, an important center of activity.

I make a point to go to Lancaster PA every year. I love the food! My favorites are stewed green beans with ham, and an apple dumpling. I always buy a full Shoo-fly pie to take home! Yum!

This is on our list to visit since it is not that far from where we are and our son lives in Philly! When we retire we plan on taking our small trailer on a nice trip! It's nice to see what you are doing.

I relocated to Lancaster County 12 years ago. I came from a big city so at first it was a huge culture shock. I have adjusted really well here and have met a lot of nice people. I don't live far from many of the areas that you visited. Thank you so much for sharing.

I really like this video of an amazing area. Brings back memories of working/living in north west Delaware in 2013. Too bad I couldn't handle the extreme weather and returned to Cali. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
