I'm 90 years old. When I was about 10 years old the White Tower in Phila. served hamburgers that way that cost 5 CENTS each. They were about the size of a silver dollar and I used to dream about actually having a whole dollar so I could buy 20 of them AND EAT THEM ALL! I never got the dollar, it was during the great depression.

I remember having something like this in a small town in Wisconsin, New London.
My father, and grandpa would take me on fishing trips on the Wolf River. Passing thru this town we always stopped at a tavern called Manskis. I don’t remember if my spelling is correct or not, it was in the 50s, and the 60s. But the burgers were smashed thin, had plenty of onions, and only served them with homemade mustard.
I hated mustard, but if you wanted to eat, you did what your parents told you to. Eat whatever is on your plate, no exceptions.
Needless to say, I learned to like mustard.
Your rendition of these burgers, snapped my memories, great memories of better times.
Thank you.

Greg, I must have eaten at SID's in my last life, because all of my life, I make my burgers with just buns, patty, onion, and mustard. That iSync most favorite combination of a burger! I've never really cared for lettuce or tomato on my burgers. Big thumbs up!

Johnny's onion burgers in El Reno has been around forever also. Johnny's and Syds have the BEST onion burgers around. Cannot be beat. Bunny's in Okc come in very close. A must have if you ever come to Oklahoma. There is also a Syds in Minco which is South of ElReno.

That's all you need! A burger you can actually fit into your mouth. Pickles, onions, cheese, mustard. Great stuff, sir! 🔥👏

In my town their were two brothers one opened up a bar and the other a restaurant that makes burgers just like this. They are the best burgers you'll ever eat. Both have passed on but family still runs the businesses.

I grew up in El Reno. Can confirm. They have an entire day dedicated to the almighty fried onion burger. 😂

I'm showing my age with this. Back in the day when I was growing up my mother would mix Lipton onion soup mix along with breadcrumbs and eggs into the meat. There were eight of us kids and my dad was a lone bread winner, back then that was the way it was done. It was actually very good. But, then again. How developed are your taste buds at ten years old? Just the fact of eating food that was cooked on the grill was cool. I'm going to make them again exactly the same way and see if it was nostalgia that made them taste so good or not. Thanks so much for posting this.

When I was young, in the mid 50's, we would go to El Reno to catch the Rock Island passenger train. We would always get there early so that we could get an onion burger from Johnny's.  It was a strange place, very narrow with only a "bar" and no tables.  We would sit up at the bar and eat the greatest burgers in the whole world, the onion burger.  Whenever I have the opportunity to eat at Johnny's, or Sid's, I do it and I would recommend it.  Nobody who likes burgers will go away unhappy!  Thanks for the video.

We just made these and the consensus among the family was it was the best smash burger that we’ve yet cooked.

I served them with Ethan Chlebowski’s oven fried potato wedges and Not Another Cooking Show’s pasta salad.

Epic meal.

I remember growing up as a kid in the 50s stopping at a tavern that only served burgers. I believe the tavern was called Manskies in New London Wi. They served a similar burger with homemade mustard. You couldn't find a catup bottle in the joint.
Loved that place, thanks for making that burger, for it brought back tons of memories.

I wouldn't chrome the stainless griddle. If you want a chrome one, just run out and buy regular steel and have it nickel plated, which is what I did. Performance is similar, but the nickel holds its heat much closer to the surface, rather than radiating it outward. That being said... It looks cool as hell!

Three maybe four years ago, on our way home from celebrating dad's 90th B-day, we stopped at Sid's, sat at the counter and watched Sid cook our burgers. He had a plate piled high with meatballs all ready for the grill. He put a mound of shredded onions on the balls of meat and flattened them out.

Sid used a cement trowel that had the end ground down to turn the burgers. I thought it was very cool. Anyway, they were the best burgers ever.

The place is small but, the wait and the flavor was worth the time spent there. I even came home with one of their black Sid's T shirts.

Been watching your videos for quite a while and never have I been so inspired to cook for myself. Not just burgers and phillies and whatnot, but everything! Who needs coulinary school when you're an alumni at Youtuberversity.
