I followed his advice and it actually made me so much more productive because I have no time for anything except for work now. Didn't get a raise tho.

This is the best advice to get empty promises from your boss.

"Can you help me set a path?"

"No. Now get back to work."

Giving your boss the carrot to dangle in front of you is a great way to get more work/responsibilities without actually getting a raise.

Yeah... or your boss promises that and strings you along to get extra work out of you till you leave. That is probably the more accurate depiction of reality.

I just wanna say, never be loyal to a company unless it’s yours.

I love these fantasies where the boss will always hear you out, keep their promises and not quit before any of this pans out.

Tried the advice. Got 4 months of the run around. Finally after a year of showing them I am the best at what I do I said I am leaving for a better opportunity. They panicked and gave me a huge raise. Sometimes you have to take what’s yours

Absolutely, just work 3 times as hard for the next 6 years while I find a replacement

Simon is proof that if you talk enough out of your rear end, eventually you can become successful too even if you know absolutely nothing about nothing 🙏🏼

Telling them I want more money or I am leaving has always worked for me 😂

The distance between this advice and reality is in lightyears. As someone said you are basically overburdening yourself in the hope of getting raise which you ideally deserve at current your current work load.

Plot Twist:

This advice was sponsored by every Fortune 500 CEO.

I did this exact thing. So our end target was a year for a promotion and we laid out a path together to get there. I checked in with him each month to ensure that I was still on my path to senior. I went above and beyond that set path, and you know what I got? Two people who had been there for less years got promoted, and he told me he had no idea what I was talking about.
Lesson:
Save yourself the time and heartache. Move to a better company for that raise. They are all sports teams, go to the best team that will pay you what you're worth. End of story.

Most bosses think of the job as an event and the employee as a replaceable cast member.
