This is great information! I made quilts for years not realizing I had to use this technique of matching the size of opposite borders. It has made ALL the difference in preventing the waviness in my borders that was making quilting my quilts a nightmare! Thanks!

OMG! I am a 68 years old recently retired nurse and I started sewing during Covid. Yesterday I squared up my huge centrepiece which consists of a a village with 5 clusters of houses, with streets, trees, grass etc. The walls of the houses are minimum the height of A4 because of a collection of photos within each cluster. All the houses are appliquéd. This is only my third ever sewing project which I am hand piecing and hand quilting. My son is in real estate. It took me three hours to square up and I had to get my husband to help me. My cutting line was ok lengthwise because I had been meticulous to keep the walls perpendicular while piecing but somehow my measurements were 3 cm different on each side. I couldn’t cut off at the bottom because I only had 6 inches and it was parallel to the bottom of the houses. I adjusted the sky but had to make magic so that I still had 90 degrees in the corners. But anyway, I’m now out by half an inch which I will adjust with the frame I’m putting around. Wish I had found your video before yesterday.

Thanks for that very clear and concise explanation of why adding borders properly is critical to keeping your quilt square and flat! I messed up my quilts for years just sewing on borders cut to fit the sides. I could not figure out why my quilts had so much waviness and they were a nightmare once they got onto a longarm for quilting. I never add a border now anywhere in a quilt without using this simple and effective method!

Thank you for this video. I'm still so confused... If your quilt has three different measurements but you make the borders one size, how do the borders still fit when the quilt top is slightly larger or smaller than the length of the border strips? Why not trim the quilt top to be the same width and length all around? Why not trim the border to size after it's sewn on? I have done the latter without noticing any bunching but only on smaller sized tops. It seems to me if the strip is too short and you pin on both ends you'll get bunching. Is there a way to explain this or demonstrate this in even more detail? I really want to learn to do it the right way.
