From Wikipedia:
"The song itself, written by Knopfler, was inspired by his failed romance with Holly Vincent, lead singer of the short-lived band Holly and the Italians. The song speaks of a Romeo who is still very much in love with his Juliet, but she now treats him like "just another one of [her] deals". Knopfler has both stated and implied that he believes Vincent was using him to boost her career. The song's line, "Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him, " refers to an interview with Vincent, where she says "What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn't handle it and we split up.""

I just don't get how anyone doesn't think this is an instant classic. A beautiful song.

This song is such a vibe. Even if you don’t know the story of Romeo & Juliet, it’s a love song. “All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme” is a great line.

Even my hardened metal heart can't deny how beautiful this song is!

Not heard this for at least 20 years and sang along to every word, a masterpiece of a song

Brothers in arms is such a powerful song. The guitar makes you feel what the song is about. With all the war happening in the world right now, this song might make you cry!

Not only one of my favorite songs by The Dire Straits but one of my favorite songs in general.

Every song of Mark Knopfler's is a story. Can't think of one that isn't. He had a journalist background, he is a wordsmith and is still telling songs today, many of them are historical in nature. And paired with his awesome "fingerpicking" guitar style, his music remains one of my favorites. I've continued to follow him past the Dire Straits days and enjoy his music immensely.

Knopfler is a storyteller extraordinaire

This song is gold. Unfortunate video but the song is everything.

"And all I do is miss you, and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat, the bad company
And all I do is kiss you, through the bars of a rhyme
Juliet, I'd do the stars with you, anytime..."

This entire album, Making Movies, is a masterpiece. Between this, Tunnel of Love and Skateaway, they are some of the greatest songs Knopfler ever wrote, in my opinion.

"TWISTIN' BY THE POOL!" is a must! Big fun!

Love this song and the whole album. In the lyrics "The movie song" and "There's a place for us" refer to a song in West Side Story, a modern day romeo and juliet between two opposing gangs. Skateaway is another good one from this album.

This song is so smooth and just flows with greatness. When I hear it, I am reminded of a wonderful little 90s film called "Empire Records".

The beautiful guitar he used had a "resonator". It is often used as a Dobro, much like a hand held steel guitar. Awesome sound.

"Hey la, my boyfriend's back" is a reference to the 1963 hit song "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Angels. Romeo and Juliet are star crossed lovers made famous by Shakespeare. Knopfler's retelling of the tale omits the tragic ending likely because including it would have deprived the song of its sweetness. Making Movies is still my favorite Dire Straits album -- "Skateaway", "Tunnel of Love", "Expresso Love", "Solid Rock", and "Romeo and Juliet". Good stuff!

"Tunnel of Love"... anyway the Making Movies album was pure magic, every song paints a moving picture, Dire Straits at their best. Then again I can't think of a bad song Knopfler ever wrote because he writes stories... and is a heck of a great guitarist on top of it all. i.e. "Telegraph Road" which actually reflects a real place is an anthem.

Mark Knopfler (the K is silent) is amazing. He's also the lead guitarist, and he finger picks without a pick. He is one of the greatest of all time, no contest.
