The amount of talent in that performance was off the scale

I'm glad you kept noticing the drummer behind Mark Knopfler going absolutely bananas. The drums are actually insane on this song.

Terry Williams, the drummer, was just amazing in this. This is one of the greatest live rock and roll performances ever. Someone mentioned that Terry's father was in the crowd, and this was the first time he saw his son perform in concert. Terry was known for hitting the drums really hard. He is retired now, in his mid-seventies.

10 of the best minutes on YouTube. Dire Straights was so talented and tight. And Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists in history, with a totally unique, slinky, fluid, understated style. Hes super fast but doesnt overplay - just ALWAYS hits the right notes at the right time.

And Terry Williams is a beast on the drums. Love how you noticed how the band responds to his mad fill about 3 minutes in - he challenges them to up their energy and they do. So great.

No auto tune no fancy effects. Just good old rock and roll. Such a fun band.

Terry Williams doesn't get the recognition he deserves for his tireless performance on the drums. This is a real master at the top of his game!

Being a working guitarist in the 70's was absolutely incredible with the likes of Hendrix, Santana, Clapton, Page, Beck, Iommi, Gilmour, Lifeson, Townsend, Young, Howe, Blackmore, Walsh, May, Van Halen and Knopfler to listen to although I didn't understand just how lucky I was until decades later when we slowly went back to formulaic "pop". This was the "Bands" era where creativity and ingenuity stood supreme and the Studios took a back seat. The music you are diving into now was created with love and passion, which is why us 'old timers' love to see young'uns discovering what we took for granted growing up. Love your reactions and it's OK to stop and go back because you enjoy it so much we've listened to them thousands of times.

It's rare that I like a live version of a song as much as the studio version. This is a masterpiece!

Mark Knopfler's improv skills are simply insane. It's a very simple song when you just look at the chord progressions & rhythms etc. but the tightness & skills of the band & Marks individual flair just makes it something truly special.

Terry Williams is just unreal. The way he synced the drums with Mark's guitar, holding back and then blowing up at the right times... he's a true musician.
Edit: how could I not have said the obvious: Mark Knopfler. Never has an artist engaged more beautifully with his instrument. Talk about singing without words, by means of your guitar.

How Mark Knopfler plays guitar so beautifully just by plucking the strings is a wonder to behold, and incidentally, he's left handed...! He's just an incredible

Knopfler was, and is, one of the five best lead players I've ever heard (been listening to music since my mother played the piano as a kid, now 80). I love players that finger pick, and Knopfler is not only fast, but clean! Great player, and an outstanding rythym section.

That drummer, Terry Williams, is one of the best Rock drummers around.

I loved your reaction to this, Aileen. More tracks by Dire Straits, "Brothers in Arms", "Romeo and Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life", "Telegraph Road" there are plenty of other tracks but these are good ones to start with.

Douglas Adams once wrote that Mark Knopfler can make a guitar hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink

This is without doubt the greatest guitar solo ever played. And finger plucked by the insanely talented Mark Knopfler…..I’m reliably told by those who have tried to recreate it, it’s literally impossible!
