Musgrave Pencil King Pencil Review

A new offering from the Musgrave Pencil Company in Shelbyville, Tennessee, the Pencil-King pencil celebrates the discovery of some vintage steel printing dies. The Pencil-King die, believed to be from the late 1940's, is the first to be used. The pencils are painted a royal purple with a gold foil imprint. The ferrule, a bright gold color, is a triple-knurled beauty with a white eraser. Musgrave used a rich #1 core on this round-barreled pencil, which comes packed in a dozen in a handsome purple and gold tube. I was anxious to try this pencil!

I just ordered these and can’t wait to give them a try. Nothing like a smooth dark pencil to write with!

Kevin, great review as always! Always Analog and Calvacade of Food are two of my favorite channels on YouTube, so thanks for doing this! I bought a box of the Pencil King's and I'm looking forward to giving them a whirl!

Would love to hear your thoughts on this Vs the Harvest #1 - are they the same core?

Excellent review. I really want to try these out, but I am such a fan of cedar pencils that I just don't think I can do it. I am so much in love with the Tennessee Reds that I think I'll stick with them.

$2.00 or so for a fantastic pencil isn't a stretch considering how long it will last. Good video, thanks! 🤗

Oh, those are magnificent! Majestic, even!
I was not aware of this new Musgrave offering; thanks for bringing this to my attention.
I particularly like the attention given to the ferrule. Vintage pencils have such a wonderful variety of ferrules, but modern pencil makers tend to keep to the same bland, uninspiring designs. These look wonderful.

I'm always disappointed when a white, latex free eraser on a pencil doesn't mean that it's as good as a pentel polymer. Loved the review, may have to order.

Very nice pencil. I wish it were cedar. In fact I left a message on their instagram post about it - they didn't reply of course. I still may get some. Thanks for the review!

I love the look and found the same issue with the eraser which was a bit disappointing.

So this is not a reproduction of an old pencil but an original? Looks great. Good gift for anyone who loves purple. I always appreciated the old imprints they would give pencils with different fonts, etc. I noticed they also came out with a variety pack of the Unigraph drawing pencils in it's own box.

I'd love to buy a tube of these, but MAN a $1.25 apiece seems steep!

If you don't like the erasers they offer many very good untipped pencils order some hi polymer erasers that go on the end of the untipped pencils and problem solved. I agree the erasers could be better but for all their pencils but they make some super high quality pencils Tennessee reds/rounds and unigraph are my favorite. Also the test pencils were never really meant to write with just make marks the cores on those being straight isn't the highest priority. Unigraph and the Tennessee reds/ rounds you won't find many off center cores
