Musgrave Test Scoring Pencil Review

Well known among pencil fans, the Musgrave Test Scoring 100 pencil has been a long-standing favorite of those who like a dark, rich, smooth line. The silver woodcase pencils are hexagonal, and feature a chrome-tone ferrule and pink eraser. They are made in the USA.

If you like this pencil, try the Berol Electronic Scorer 350. It corrects all the faults of the Musgrave test scoring pencil.

I do quite like the wood that Musgrave uses. I sometimes prefer their basswood over the cedar just because of how easy it is to sharpen. It works incredibly well in the Apsara Long point sharpener

Great review, as usual!

1. My last order of these over a year ago also came in a plastic bag. The box is a nice touch — clearly a part of Musgrave's overall graphic design and marketing renaissance.

2. More than a few of my Test Scoring 100 have off-axis cores, too. Musgrave needs to deal with this. Imagine being some poor kid sweating out an SAT or ACT test who must cope with the asymmetrical wood that renders a worn point unusable.

3. The attached erasers on mine are all lousy. They feel dry and chemically mismatched to the graphite. Pity the student who lacks a block eraser and must deal with the TS100's built-in one.

4. I don't have sweaty digits or a tight grip, but by the halfway stage, the black-ink type starts wearing off.

5. I wonder if Musgrave intentionally has lower quality control on this pencil because they don't expect the target demographic to keep them around for anything other than a test.

I wonder if you can get closer to their old price if you order a gross of them or something. They do seem to have gone Hollywood with their pricing lately. Obviously everything has gone up, but...
