The ancient concept of growth referred to a function of nature, the development of natural phenomena and their qualities. While in many modern contexts growth simply means 'bigger' on some numerical scale, the word has come to play a key role in almost everything we consider important and desirable. But rather than appreciating the limits and costs to growth, we often assume it can continue infinitely, if managed. Has modern society’s hijacking of this ancient concept unlocked humanity's true potential, or put us on the road to dysfunction and ruin?

Series hosts Bernardo Kastrup and Fred Matser discuss this fascinating topic with former Chief Business Officer for Google X, entrepreneur and the author of the book Solve for Happy, Mo Gawdat.

Bernardo Kastrup is a Dutch computer scientist, philosopher, and one of the most prominent defenders of "metaphysical idealism" - the notion that reality is essentially mental - in the academic world today. Bernardo has worked as a scientist in leading laboratories across the world including CERN and the Philips Research Laboratories, and he is a regular contributor to Scientific American.

Fred Matser is the founder & chairman of the Fred Foundation and a leading Dutch humanitarian. He has been active in social and ecological transformation and is the founder and co-founder of a wide range of charitable foundations that span the fields of health, environment, nature conservation, peace and global transformation. The principles underlying these foundations are based on inspiring co-creativity, self-sufficiency, empowerment, inspiration and harmony.

I found listening to you all so interesting and am keen to convey the respect I have for all of you. I have been a prominent politician amd took the opportunity of lockdown to become more aware, concious through hundreds of books and audiobooks from science, spiritually and religion.
I learned the following things that became very clear to me.
I can never make anyone happy but I can clear out all the the things that make me unhappy and release the true state of bliss that was always within me. I think your are all expressing this but with different words.

As for politics. I learned that there are just a handful of obvious, simple, positive things that would transform our political system from what I call a " shamicracy" to s true ' peoples democracy "

Thanks again for sharing a reality inspiring talk🙂

"We are growing the number of cars we have in our garage..." Who are you talking about ? I am not, and even if I wanted to I would not be able to afford more than the 10+ yo used small car that I drive. It seems that academics live in a fairytale of abundance everywhere and that everybody has "more than they need" but they still cannot think of anything else than accumulating more of the same type of stuff !!

Sorry, you lost me comparing a year of my life to a gallon of gas. A Google alum trying to shame me for wanting to take a drive to visit a friend. That's rich.
