Bog Turtle Research

The bog turtle is an endangered species in New Jersey. It is considered imperiled in this state due to its rarity and vulnerability throughout its range in the eastern United States. Tiny, dark and with a distinct orange patch behind the ears, they spend most of their lives underground. NJ Fish & Wildlife’s Endangered and Nongame Species Program (ENSP), New Jersey Audubon, and other Federal, State and non-government organization partners initiate conservation efforts including habitat management, population monitoring, land acquisition and landowner outreach to help protect this species. The transmitters are attached to allow staff to track the bog turtle population and implement a watershed-based management strategy for their protection and recovery.
