There is an exception to the "Guitar players shouldn't be counting the song off" statement. That's if the guitar player is also a drummer

As a guitar player, I agree with that ending statement.

Exceptions to this rule:

1. If the drummer can’t remember song names and can only identify songs by how they go

2. If the drummer isn’t comfortable with drawing attention to themselves by shouting at the start of each song (some drummers choose their instruments purely so they can stay at the back)

3. If any instrument other than drums start the song

4. If your drummer is Lars Ulrich

for nirvana songs like Drain You and Breed you can hear the drum starting after the guitar with coordination and actually sounds good

If it’s a song where all instruments are used at the start, then sure drummers count. But if not, it should just be whoever has the instrument that goes first. (Ex: Everlong starts with the guitar; Crazy Train starts with “All Aboard” then the bassist + Drummer)

Cobain was so blasted he didn’t know what he was doing

Exactly! The singers in my bands do that all the time

Always check with your band mates if they are ready lol

I believe in this clip, he actually did that on purpose as a joke. Not 100% sure, though. I just think I've heard that somewhere.

As a guitar player myself, I find it incredebly important for me to be able to count the time instead of just solely relying on the drummer to keep me in time

I have a jazz background, and this is how it works in jazz too (except for big band)

Another exception to the rule: if you're the Ramones

I know a few guitarists who sometimes count in the song then immediately start playing it at another tempo 😂

That was before in ear monitors. Dave doesn’t even use those today either

Guitar player here... Never knew this was a thing. I've never counted in unless the song starts with no drums

I rely on my drummer like they have my life in their hands😭 I NEED to hear the beats

well, even The Beatles never let ringo count 1 to 4 just before starting the song when performing live or even in the studio tapes. It was always John or Paul. One example is the intro of the studio version of I Saw Her Standing There.

Just putting it out there, lead singers need to check to see if everyone is ready.

Never knew that. I’ve been in 2 bands and i always and i mean always told my guitar to start it off except we are covering song that doesn’t start with it.
