How Do: Elixir - Part 1 - Functional Programming

In this somewhat hands-on instruction I try to explain what I think are the critical Functional Programming concepts for working with Elixir. This is the first paradigm I had to shift getting into the language and some of the things I found difficult to break through in my programming habits.

If you want to learn more about Elixir itself here are the links to the Elixir Getting Started guide and Elixir SchoolÖ

There's also RSS or the YouTube subscribe + notify button.

This is exactly what I imagined an Elixir expert looks like.

I will have an elixir interview today, without any experience with the language. You are a life saver!

Thank you for these videos! Good job!
About symbols, here are my two cents, in case it can help further.
Symbols can be considered as:
- labels, as a country name or a city name is in a map
- atoms, for those coming with a Lisp or Prolog family background
- symbols, for Rubyists :)
- immutable strings for everything Java-esque
- pointers to a constant character array for C or lower level programming

Great video. Excellent editing and calm demeanor. A pleasure after drinking and grilling meat outside to lie down and watch some cool code. Reminds me of prolog takes me back 22 years ago. Good times. I need a backend that one man can hack up a great program, a rapid application tool for backend that will be stable and scalable and fun to code. Front end mobile I chose flutter after bad experiences with react native in production - pain and they just keep making it more complex for no reason. Feels like amateur research hour. I need something better engineered that one man can make a difference with. Cheers nice hair and excellent editing.

Hello, what microfon and sound 'settings'/interface etc. do you use in this video?
It sounds very good :)

Fold - you provide the initial state
Reduce - the first item is the initial state

That's how it is in f#, scala etc...

could you help me find the code for "Finds the all possible subsets from given array of digits for a 2 digit sum value" in elixir?

Good. I would suggest that the flow of the video to be a bit faster, can be somewhat boring when talking slowly, cutting the voids in sentences would be great and help more focus on ideas. Good job bro!

Atoms kinda seem like Javascript symbols - or not?

This is, for my personal taste, too much going for traditional imperative and OO programmers.

I am waiting, and for years now, for a tutorial that just assumes the person watching it has no clue about programming.

Since functional programming could be such a nice introduction into programming, to people who have no assumptions about programming.

Seeing an introduction video filled with stuff like a for loop, is disappointing.
