Neurodiverse Friends - Schizophrenic SKIT

Welcome back to "Neurodiverse Friends" with Pixi & co. - Cats on the Spectrum! This time we delve into the complex and often misunderstood world of Schizophrenia. This mental health condition affects reality perception, with experiences such as illusions (distorted reality) and hallucinations (mind fabrications) that are usually visual but can also involve other senses. Schizophrenia has three phases: the 'prodromal phase', showing subtle changes in behavior and thoughts; the 'active phase', where symptoms become more pronounced; and the 'residual phase', where symptoms may fade but challenges persist. Through my animation, I aim to bring awareness to the daily experiences of those living with Schizophrenia. I hope you enjoy it.

Fun fact: people with schizophrenia are statistically less likely to harm you than non-schizophrenics. Those with more severe cases are usually too reclusive or afraid to even attempt to hurt anyone else. It’s a condition that causes harm to self more than anyone else. It is VERY rare that they’re violent, even during psychotic episodes. They’re usually just scared.

It’s one of the most stigmatized mental conditions out there and it’s really sad to see these people be further outcast because of the perceptions we have of them. I won’t pretend like it’s not a rough condition and I won’t pretend like it’s not sometimes scary to observe, but remember, they need and deserve help. They’re not scary, they’re usually scared. Be there for them

The fact you even includded catatonic schizophrenia makes me so happy. My partner has it and he very Much often will have moments where he just locks up and does nothing. Schizophrenia is SO much more then just hallucinations

I feel like schizophrenia is one of the more misunderstood mental conditions, so it’s nice to see a video about it where the character isn’t a criminal in the making or even experiencing super dark hallucinations involving death or demons or something

I love the simple way that mental illness can impact an individual, rather than overdoing it to such a villanous extreme. Because those with schizophrenia AREN'T evil. They just see things differently.

As a person who does not know much about schizophrenia but who does have ADHD, autism, and cPTSD, I feel like the others also having little versions of themselves at the end is kind of a "Hey, we deal with stuff like this too, so we understand and we can help." There are so many comorbidities and overlaps between different mental conditions, and this represents that so well!

thank you for making ppl realize that schizophrenia is just a neurodiverse condition and not some "I hear the voices of satan's forces and they tell me to kill my family" horseshit. we need more representation such as this, very helpful.

As a schizophrenic person, I really appreciate that you also didn't show them lashing out, but instead isolating out of fear. Far too much media shows it as if schizophrenia is an active danger to others or as if we are just ticking time bombs.
The reality that's often misrepresented is that we're far more likely to be hurt by others or ourselves than we are to hurt others, even compared to neurotypical people.

I love good representation. I have schizophrenia, and that's a lot like me off medication! Great job!

When I was first diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, I believed that I would suddenly turn violent like how they portray people like me in most media. Seeing more people not only educate but accept people like me makes things so much easier, especially when I need help and feel like I can actually voice my issues without being judged as how we're portrayed in most media.

Aw... My aunty has schizophrenia and she's so sweet and soft-spoken but has horrible hallucinations both audio and visual and she's unable to take care of herself. She had her driver's license taken from her because it's too dangerous for her to drive. Being at the mercy of any disease/disorder must be so restricting and feels like being trapped within yourself...

The fact that Autism and ADHD are the same proportions as me and my husband (short and round vs long and tall) is a lovely coincidence that makes me happy. Also how they were like “Bro we have our own toys why would we want to steal yours? Let’s hang out, ” is such a lovely way for them to offer comfort.

The people ive met who are schizophrenic are some of the most intelligent and empathetic people ive ever had the pleasure of talking to. While i was in inpatient i talked to a girl with schizophrenia quite a bit, and she really helped me feel calmer and at more at ease during my stay.

Its important that neurodiverse people like us have support and community.

I'd love to see animations made for major depression and generalized anxiety.

I don't have schizophrenia, but I have experienced psychosis. And it's so SO nice to see a portrayal that actually focuses on _delusions_ for once! Usually I see hallucinations always taking center stage, but delusions can be scary for us too. Really accurately captures the paranoia they can cause, thank you ❤

Luna, thank you. It means a lot to see our traits treated with such understanding. Gentle humor is always better than the prevalent "cringe." Props.

I don't know if I ever put into words just how much I love how you portray Skit. One of my friends has schizophrenia, and she told me once that she is a furry- not for any sexual reason, but because she enjoys being able to dress up and be childish. Her schizophrenia stole her childhood in so many ways, and her cosplaying, drawing, and roleplaying as animal characters is allowing her to reclaim her childhood and gives her comfort, because these cartoon animal characters are what she associates with safety. So seeing Skit with a doll, a generally very childish thing, just reminded me a lot of her and the way that she has used "childish" coping mechanisms and fallbacks to feel safe. :)

As someone who has Paranoid Schizophrenia, this is probably one of the most heartwarming representations I’ve ever seen.

A lot of people just chalk up schizophrenia to hallucinating people and being violent when in reality thats quite far from the truth :(

From my personal Experience with the disorder I’ve had a lot of symptoms. Auditory hallucinations are often a buzz of several voices rambling at once that proceedingly gets louder and louder. Visual hallucinations can be bugs, people, and even corpses.

I also have a symptom called Autophagia, which is a compulsive disorder that causes me to bite at, eat parts of my body such as biting skin off my nails/lips, biting my arms enough to draw blood, etc.

I’m really grateful to see more people finally portraying Schizophrenia as the disorder it actually is and teaching people that it doesn’t make us any less of a human being than others <33

I like how ADHD and Autism's toys are replicas of each other, they've become such great friends, and now they have a potential new friend too!
