Using the Line 1 input but it's only on one side (not stereo) - how do I combine the sound to left and right from one input?

I'd love to see if you can help me solve something. I'm a middle school film teacher who is lucky enough to have two of these cameras. However, whenever I try to hook up a rode mic with a 3.5 mm cable, the sound that is collected is full of static and barely audible. I have tried using a brand new (condensed and powered) Rode mic on both of them, and 3 years ago tried a different type of Rode mic with them. I am choosing mic in the functions, powering the mic on, and this should be simple. Any clue as to what I am doing wrong? The input switch is off. I posted to the Canon forum yesterday
