Thats the first thing we are told in school in Germany when it comes to the Mercator map.
Every teacher i remember, from my early school days to my graduation, when they took out the world map, they said immediately "...and do not forget, the sizes and dimensions on the map you see here are just an indication and do not reflect real dimensions"
Its like a disclaimer every time when it comes to the world map

The reason it has never been fixed is because it will be distorted, there has been at least 50 comments about this, they taught thể Mecator Projection is because it keeps the countries and continents shape as much as possible, the places in the equator are the most accurate one due to the way they make the map. Unless you want to the kids to learn Africa's shape was a stretching looking thingy. No flat world map is correct, if you want to see the true size or comparison, just using a globe, problem solved

Its also the way you use the word mate, what do you mean by "interesting reason"? These use of word are really sensitive, instead of that why don't you just explain it simply like every one does here? You're accidentally make people think bad about a literal map projection
