Denmark is in the EU and Greenland is strongly associated with the EU.
Greenland is an autonomous territory with self rule.

The US doesn't need to pay Denmark anything. Once the Greenlanders vote for independance. Then they apply to become a US state.

Greenland is unhappy and frustrated about their road from being a territory to an independent country is moving too slow. They are not unhappy about their new luxurious prison in Nuuk and expensive infrastructure, free health care, free day care, paid sick leave, the right to 6 weeks fully paid vacation a year + all holydays, 52 weeks of fully paid parental leave, free University college and the right to live and work anywhere in the EU all being a subsidy by the Danish Government. Rights and privileges that do not exist in the USA.

Besides losing all of this, their goal of being an independent country, and not just a territory most surely would be a total no-go if they were to join the USA, because of their tiny population.

Right now Greenland is under the security umbrella of both NATO that obviously include the USA, but also the EU, as the French foreign minister also has made crystal clear, that the EU will not let other nations, whoever they may be, attack its sovereign borders, both mentioning Russia and the USA, when asked about Greenland. So Trump has no leg to stand on regarding the question about the security of Greenland.

By meeting with Trump, the Danish and Greenlandic PM just want to make sure that Trump understand and respect this, and they will grant the USA the rights to patrol the waters as much as they want, and build a base more if they want, which is actually old news, because this possibility has already been agreed upon by the USA, Denmark and Greenland.

The answer to buying Greenland is exactly the same now as it was in 2019 when the Present PM of Denmark and past PM of Greenland said that buying Greenland would be unthinkable and absurd, so like then, she and the new PM of Greenland are now repeating what was said, along with all five parties in the Greenlandic parliament unanimously saying no to Greenland becoming part of the USA. Trump on the other hand still do not seem to get the message.
