Should You Be Forgiven: Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment

Forgiveness is an issue that concerns us as humans in the sense that they address the mistakes we made in the past, the blemishes of the self so to speak. However, forgiveness can sometimes be difficult to obtain. After all, we would need to seek forgiveness externally as well as internally. Many times, forgiving yourself is harder than being forgiven by others. In Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment, the character of Marmeladov is in need of such forgiveness. In his speech, he speaks of a God who will pity and forgive all. Is such a transcendent source of forgiveness compelling? What are the pros and cons of such a form of forgiveness?

Loved this! Crime and Punishment is one of my fav novel.

Being complacent in being forgiven is a good point. I like Nietzsche's take on this in TSZ:

"And if a friend does you wrong, then say: "I forgive you what you have done to me; that you have done it to YOURSELF, however--how could I forgive that!”

6:41 God is the one who was truly offended in all sin so he forgiving us does not interfere with these things, as well you seem to misunderstand I can’t be unrepentant and living a life of sin and be forgiven and go to Heaven. You have to live faith and love

Very nice - I think it is fascinating and beautiful that only the strongest can truly love and forgive

Alot of things I'll try to add:
1- Punishment and Forgiveness can both co-exist you can punish someone not from the hate from your heart but for those 5 benefits you mentioned and you might not even relish in it but to see it as a necessary saying since we forgive them no punishment is acted upon is dumb.
2- I don't believe in truly evil people
3- God does not absolve anyone for any reason and it isn't up to anyone to say that God forgives you
God forgives those which regardless of their crime truly regret it and that is something only in the heart of the perpetuator can be answered

this is used as a mechanism to perserve mental health(actually alot of christianity is) people who have overwhelming guilt of the self or are unable to forgive themselves is one of the main reasons for depression

Ill give you an example you can hurt someone because they hurt you and if you think that was the moral thing to do and you don't regard it as something to be forgiven then God won't forgive you if you see it as something to be forgiven yet you don't regret it you won't be forgiven if you in your heart of hearts regret doing something God will Forgive you unconditionally

This makes sense because what makes us human is that we are fundamentally flawed so even if we have all the facts all the occurrences in order we understand that person's brain chemistry we all have blindsides emotional and logical flaws it would be a ridiculous claim to infer that we as humans can judge wether something can be forgiven even in the impossible event that we can completely comprehend and understand a situation

We all have different brains different environments different traumas it is literally impossible to completely understand someone's position or reasoning for doing something so only a fool would see himself as judge for forgiveness

The Law and Tribunal are void of moral or religious reasons but rather a code of conduct for us to live cooperatively

Nice vid man! Although Forgiveness is powerful, but forgiving only matters if you do it in the moment you feel out of control, overtaken by sense of revenge and anger. Forgiving someone after years of conflict is kinda meh IMO.

Everyone deserves forgiveness (and everyone eventually receives forgiveness, hell is temporary. )

For those who say that there are people who shouldn't be forgiven, just imagine holding a grudges on someone for a trillion × a trillion × a trillion × a trillion years, and making them writhe in pain forever and ever.

That would make you literally worse than them, wouldn't it. No dictator in history has ever done such things to anyone (because nobody has the magical ability to do such things)
If God did such things, it would make him a monster.

I'm not trying to evangelize & I don't think you need to follow my beliefs to be saved, but just for context, I don't base my spiritual beliefs on the Bible, but rather, I base my spiritual beliefs on the teachings of the GWB.
