It amazes me that people still think China's rise to superpower is a given, when the same was said about Japan in the 80s. And btw, China is showing ALL of the signs of a declining power that Japan did in the 90s and 00s (high personal debt, out of control housing prices, and worst of all, a declining population).

Something that I noticed that you didn't mention about why foreign businesses are feeling less inclined to do business in China these days is that they have started to realize that because of Chinese policies they have to turn over any technology manufactured in China to the Chinese government

I think the biggest thing lacking here is the geographic advantages regions have.
The US has more navigable water than the rest off the world combined. More Natural harbor locations than the rest off the world combined. Significant oil and gas reserves. The largest continuous agricultural zone. You need to mess up hard to not be number one with such an unfair playing field.

I am Italian (EU citizen), we would never compete with the States. We view the States as our eternal partners, and would never view them as an enemy

I don't see the EU as becoming a rival to the US. Less because of potential, more because both are democratic and on, overall, good terms. We've had our disputes with the EU and its member states, but they've been the geopolitical equivalent of sibling quarrels.

China is already a super power. What you mean is it cannot be the dominant power and you are right because the multi polar world is here.
No coountry could or should be the only dominant hegemon. There are 194 countries in the world and no country, whether it is China, Russia or USA or EU should dominate all.

Wouldn't it make more sense to try to join NATO instead of the EU? Yes, the EU has a mutual defense clause, but a lot of European powers have decided that their military strategy is to set up logistics for the incoming US troops that will come to their aide. It would make a lot more sense to join NATO if defense is the main priority. NATO is purely about defense, whereas the EU is primarily an economic alliance that also has a mutual defense pact.
