Hey Everyone! Leo here…ever since I was young, I’ve been helping my Dad and other pastors with church media. I got my start by recording sermons on Cassette Tapes. That turned into recording drums, guitars, and my horrible teenage vocals. That turned in to 4 track recorders, then 8-Track Digital Mixers, then ProTools. I haven’t moved on from ProTools and I never will. I have always loved the behind the scenes of how audio and video work together. In today’s world, it is more important than ever to leverage technology effectively to share the Gospel.

1: THERE’S ALWAYS SOMEONE ON THE OTHER SIDE THAT NEEDS JESUS RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE

It all changed for me when I was 17. I was headed down to Unmasked, my youth group that was at a different church across town. When I walked down to the basement there were speakers and a stage playing loud walk in music. It totally brought me into a worship moment without anyone noticing. It was called King of Majesty.

My heart was struck with something I never had experienced before. I fought back tears. I felt like I discovered a world I belonged in, and somehow I felt new purpose in my life. Long story short, I had struggled with thoughts of suicide, and no one ever knew it. This small thing was one door the Lord walked in and rescued me through. It was WALK IN music guys!! That moment led me to ask, “Who was that on the walk in music?” to my youth pastor. “Hillsong United.” I had NO IDEA worship could be like that. I dove deep into Hillsong United and had many encounters with Jesus listening privately in my room to the recorded albums I had access to. I had never experienced God through a CD before. EVER. I’ve never stopped chasing Jesus since, even though the media forms have changed. Let’s partner with the God who saves, who rescues and who is always chasing the ones who belong to him.

Ever since that moment I have been writing my own worship music and chasing the same God I experienced in those recordings. He’s the same, but the media has changed in 20 years. That moment came from the praises of God in a room full of people somewhere being captured and mixed down into a digital format.

2. EVANGELISM LOOKS DIFFERENT IN 2023, AND WE NEED TO SHIFT OUR PRIORITIES

I consider it the Church of 2023’s task to be digital evangelists. No, I’m not saying replace our worship gatherings with only online. (How weird would that be!?).

What I am saying is that encounters with the Lord can be multiplied EXPONENTIALLY with a good recording and mixdown of that moment. How many times have you been driving your car, unassuming, and the Presence of God breaks into your car? The church is called to be a light to MILLIONS of people desperate for a God they don’t know yet. Let’s help get the Gospel to them where they already are.

Now here lies the problem: our livestream mixes can hurt us too. A bad livestream experience can be a detractor. It’s a catch 22. What’s the solution? Just stop streaming and being a light to the world? I say no. Your livestream setup might not be up to its full potential yet.

3. NEW TECHNOLOGY IS CHEAP AVAILABLE AND IT’S NEVER BEEN EASIER TO SOUND GOOD

Here’s where I feel pressed to help our churches. I believe we can do better. Sometimes we give up on our livestream mixes because we say, “We don’t have professionals on staff to take care of this.” I recently recorded a YouTube video about how to mix a LiveStream with nothing more than a current digital mixer, a USB cable, and a Computer. There are numerous DAW’s out there that are very inexpensive, some are even free. Getting a good livestream mix has never been easier, thanks to a few tools and principles that I would love to introduce. It is my heart to help, even if you take away some basic mixing principles.
