Black Autistic Women Excluded (SHOCKING)

There is a CRAZY lack of data on autism in Black women and girls That you NEED To See

There is an underrepresentation of Black females in autism research and the consequences of this data gap.

The current diagnostic tools and criteria for autism may not adequately capture the experiences of Black women and girls.

There are efforts to address the data gap, such as the development of culturally responsive assessment tools.

Now organisations have made calls for increased inclusivity and diversity in autism research to ensure accurate understanding and support for all individuals affected by autism.

I am so blessed to have this video. I just in the past 2 years have been realizing I am on the spectrum and no one has talked about how it's seen in African Americans. And I feel like it's vastly different from other nationalities because our traditions ignore any problems that we have and as long as we survive your black parents will claim you are fine despite any issues you may still struggle with behind closed doors.

As a black autistic woman, i found that our community has a long way to go (especially with religious people who view autism as "kids behaving badly") - nobody in my own family has even asked how it affects me etc

Black communities are notorious for not dealing with mental health issues. There are two reasons for this: one is due to our mistrust of the medical community, which has a horrible and continuing history with our community, and the way that they treat us as a people. Before gathering data, we must fix the trust issues between the Medical and Black communities. The second reason is due to Black National Trauma; we have the attitude of "shake it off and be strong." We aren't allowed to hurt. We aren't allowed to cry. We aren't allowed to break. Neither are our children. The damage that has been done to our children is enormous. I think it's just starting to turn around, but the experience of chattel slavery and the Black Holocaust, plus the silent War on our existence called Racism, has taken a toll.

This guy is so true! WOC and especially black women are too often excluded from diagnoses or pushed to the sidelines in favour of their white counterparts. I am a 17 yr old Irish woman and had to wait YEARS for an autism diagnosis and proper support, but I can’t imagine how awful it is for people of colour who are less supported and recognised! Thanks for making this video, things need to change and anyone should feel in a position to seek help and understanding. Autism is real and valid, it deserves to be acknowledged!

Good luck to anyone currently seeking a diagnosis, it will get better ! xx

❤ as a black autistic woman and mom of an autistic boy, i needed to hear this. You are right it os important to capture black women and people of color. First we must increase access to autism information amd services that take into account diversity and also the stigma of autism for people of color especially black and brown people ❤

Thanks for the post it made me feel seen; heard, and respected. 😅🎉🎉🎉

I’m an autistic African American woman. Your video is spot on. I wasn’t diagnosed til after 50. Sadly, it’s not even on the radar for clinicians.

Thank you for bringing up the cultural aspect! Mental health (and I’ll go as far to say physical health) isn’t taken seriously in the African American community. Due to previous medical history towards us, we’re reluctant to see a medical professional. There are campaigns to encourage AA people to live healthier lives and to seek medical help but we do have a long way to go.

My mother came here from another country in the 70s. She thinks everything is depression or drugs lol. No in between.

😢💖🙏 Thanks for the video. I think it has something to do with health disparities over here, and how different cultures and genders are just ignored. Also, in my family, it doesn't matter what you struggle with internally, you still have to "do the job", whether you have physical or mental handicaps or differences.

I am a UK based black woman diagnosed recently with autism and its quite a lonely experience as i dont feel that i have a tribe that understands the intersections and struggles. The advice to "be yourself" probably resonates to all autistic people as rage inducing but even worse for black women who are faced with never showing anger for fear of perpetuating angry black woman stereotypes. As you can imagine, having autistic meltdowns in view of anyone else is an absolute no and so the pressure to control yourself and "mask harder" leads to permanent exhaustion and avoidance of because I feel my emotions very deeply and its been met with "be more resilient", " get over it". I would love to imagine the freedom of being myself and being embraced for it. But i feel destined to continue on a path of rejection and misunderstanding. Its so sad 😢

Thank you for this video. I presume you're white, and this helps shed light on Black women and non-white autistic folks. Searching autism also results in TONS of info and videos by white folks. Same w yoga and other topics. As an autistic, emerging Indigenous health researcher, I'll be doing a fair amount of work in this area. Thanks again... ❤
