Women have a 1-in-8 chance of getting breast cancer in their lifetime. If you have breast cancer, you have a much better chance of being cancer-free if it is caught early.

Breast medical oncologist Christiana Brenin, MD, lists the early signs and symptoms of breast cancer that both men and women should watch out for.

If you find a symptom, and it lasts longer than two weeks, reach out to your doctor. No finding is too little or unimportant. If it worries you, get it checked out.

Transcript

If you’re a woman, you have a 1 in 8 chance of getting breast cancer during your lifetime.

In its early stages, there may be no symptoms for detecting breast cancer. But as the cancer grows, there are changes that both women and men should watch for:

A lump or thickening, such as a mass, swelling, skin irritation or distortion, in or near the breast or in the underarm area
A change in the size or shape of the breast
A change in the color or feel of the skin of the breast, areola or nipple: it might be dimpled, puckered or scaly.
You may notice nipple discharge, erosion, tenderness, or inversion, which means the nipple is pointing inward.

If you have a new finding that lasts 2 weeks or longer, and that is unusual for you, reach out to your doctor.

With early diagnosis, there’s a 98% chance of surpassing the five-year survival rate.

Here's a spin on symptom! I had a tiny, tiny "discharge" on my right nipple. I thought it was soap build up. I would scratch it off every so often without giving g it a second glance. My hooe is that you professionals begin to describe and detail what you mean when you list "discharge" as a symptom. Also, for a long time, I felt a tiny bit of pain when putting on the seat belt when getting ready to drive. Never gave it a thought. On a whim one day, I decided to be responsible and scheduled a mammogram as it had been many years since having one. Within two days, I was called back to get a diagnostic mamo. Sure enough, it was cancer. A small lump (smaller than a tictack) was found. Had the stage lump removed. I am 5 years post op and fine so far as I can tell. Please be more careful about describing symptoms.

This is very scary to think about for me...I'm 16 and my doctor has already made plans for me to be tested for Breast Cancer at the time I'm 18..my mother died of cancer when I was 6, later on I learned that I'd possibly get it because it's a gene from my mother's side. All I can hope is that it doesn't happen, and that I don't get these symptoms in the future..

2 THINGS EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW!
#1. 70٪ Breast cancer travels to the bone first- so please pay attention to how your loved ones feel! My wife's blood test were always good so the doctors NEVER did a pet scan until 2 years after her bone pain started.

#2 MAKE SURE YOUR PHARMACIST KNOWS YOUR CANCER DRUGS!

My wife was on a STATIN (Lipitor)for cholesterol. It had a HORRIBLE reaction her chemo pill (Afinitor)! She was vomiting 10 times a day, lost 20lbs and her Dr didn't even know the cause!

My wife IS doing better now, off the statin, decreased amount of chemo (was 10mg-now can only tolerate 5mg). On chemo 3 weeks off 1 week. Vomiting only 2-3 times per week instead of 10 times a day.

Please take care of yourselves ♡

I’m 13 and today I found a lump on the bottom of my breast. It’s scary because I know it’s a possibility that I have breast cancer. My grandma died of breast cancer. This is really scaring me.

2 weeks?! A new finding lasting two weeks THEN I ask my doc?! That’s insane. I went to see my doc the first DAY I noticed a lump and they praised me up and down for getting in so fast. Said it could save my life if it turns out to be bad news.

I HATE that women sometimes get breast cancer. Believe it or not, my life is quite a bit different from that of most people's. When I was growing up, I became different after I experienced a stroke, but I did have this Jesus-like look about me. It always hurt me inside because I always wanted to cure people, but yet I didn't have those powers. In m6 neighborhood, there were some very ignorant people who believed that I was putting curses on people, but that is the absolute furthest thing from the truth. I love girls/women. I'd be stopping everything bad that happens to you if I could, and, yes I even mean for my ex-wife. There was once some very weird stuff that happened in my life, but I've never cursed a woman. I love you all. My mom was awesome and I miss her every damn day of my life. If things turn around for me, yes I will start donating and trying to help. I'm not a bad person. My personality is that sometimes I joke too much. Not about cancer, but about the silly way people act, and even about myself sometimes. I love you women. I wish that I had the answer but I do not. Anyone can get cancer. I could get it too. I pray for a cure.

Hello, if the nipple is pionting inward, but sometimes it's pointing outward, is that still a sign or no? Btw, I'm just 9 years old. Is it normal for kids? Thank you :)

I don't have any of these signs. But I have a cyclic breast pain which my doctor told me was due to the menstrual cycle and such. But like 2 days ago I developed a pain in my shoulder-neck region and around my arm and underarm. My right breast is also slightly bigger than my left now a dropping more than normal and also the nipple size has increased. I'm very paranoid

My friend who's 53 recently found a lump. It had not even been a year since her last mammogram. Her mammogram showed the lump but they didnt think it was anything to worry about until they looked closely at her previous mammogram and there it was. It had not been detected at the time. Long story short, it is cancer. She had a lumpectomy this past week and found out the lymph nodes are involved and needs a mastectomy
:(

That is NOT early signs! Rename this. This is later signs and means a lot of interventions because you caught it late. Early signs means NO signs. Catching it SO EARLY by imagery is the best bet so that you catch it at 2 cm or 1 cm or 3 cm ~ or even LESS, SO that it’s not distorting the breast or even that your feel it in the breast. That way you can treat with the best outcome and possibly no chemo! We need to reach for this type of catching of breast cancer NOT when it’s already palpable or distorting your breast!!

early signs, I wounder now, because someone I knew would complain about a numb nipple, got checked and was clear, ten years later truns out to her having tripple three negative, , , on bone and whole breast removed, still, ? for thirty months of life, was it worth it? I know now tripple three negative is hard to treat, and stage three they said, which more or less i think means most likely spread, sad as it was on the bone, I feel, she is the one who found the lump at breast bone area, I could not feel the lump, wish I had made her look harder at the numb nipple cause I feel it was a sign?
