I hate this trend. Very similar to the fake vents and fake exhaust tips.

Were going backwards, bringing back hubcaps and plastic bumpers etc.

They took a leaf out of Tesla’s book. Tesla uses plastics to cover the alloys to get a better coefficient of drag.

I think they take the look away from the wheels and the car, seen them on a few of the AMG’s now and the wheels design would look far better without the extra bit.

If they make them of anything else it's going to add weight to the wrong place. Cheap it's hard to find a intake manifold that's not made of plastic that is way worse if you ask me.

Not cheap, but necessary IMO..once the design was finalized plastic or similar may be the better option for the material 🤔:
1. Safety - while the vehicle is stationary, they look like a child safety hazard; for eg. If they were based on sharper, thinner, metal-based or similarly rigid material.
2. Damage - damage from road debris or curbs would leave dents/bends in the structure, requiring repair.
3. Noise - once (2.) above occurs, it may defeat the purpose as well as introduce additional noise to the experience.
4. Weight - goes without saying.

Can you remove them like in a Tesla? They look hideous in all Mercedes models.

makes sense why they do it as weight saving. However question is how will the plastic fair after a few years with the constant heat cycle of heaving braking and cold..

If it works… fine with me. If u damage it then u don’t have to replace the wheel just the plastic

It’s the one car didn't have for decade.
I don’t think its cheap.
I like the way to improve aerodynamics.

of coruse alot of people want a full alloy wheel, but if you need a replacement you will be happy about the lower price you have to pay

I buy alot of vehicles and with confidence tell you don't bother with anything newer than 2010. Mercedes has gone downhill BIG TIME. Way to much plastic and way to much technology that 90% of owners/ drivers never use or even want on their vehicles.

Why couldn't they make the entire wheels alloy

If they covered the edge of the rim as a protection against kerbing, then yeah, great. As they don't, then get rid
