This topic requires introduces pupils to word problems which can be solved by:
• Adding and subtracting using part-part-whole using the concept of number bonds
•. Addition by Counting On
• Subtraction as the reverse of addition
• Subtraction as ‘taking away’ from a set using ‘count back’ strategy

Suggested Teaching Sequence
1. Use pictorial representations and concrete objects for the number bond concept to introduce and write addition and subtraction equations.
2. Use concrete objects and pictorial representations to reinforce addition using the ‘counting on’ strategy.
3. Use concrete objects and pictorial representations to reinforce subtraction using the ‘crossing out’, ‘counting back’, ‘counting on’ and ‘number bond’ strategies.
4. Write addition and subtraction equations and solve problems individually and in small groups.

Work in groups to make addition objects/pictures and write an addition and subtraction equation for each story.
