Multi-Pitch Rappelling: Party of 3

How to rappel with a party of 3. With one ATC and two GriGris.

This technique works well when multi-stage rappelling (rappelling off a mulit-pitch) with a party of 3. The equipment used here includes one ATC (or similar) belay device with a friction hitch for the 3rd rappeler, while the first two rappelers simul-rap (rappel simultaneously) on single-strands on their Gri-Gris with the break strand redirected through a carabiner on the crotch-side of their leg-loop for additional friction and descent control, especially helpful on skinny ropes.

This video demonstrates one method for efficiently rappelling with 3 people.

NOTE: The ropes being rappelled on include an 8.9mm triple-rated rope, and an 8.0mm half rope. The ropes are joined with a flat overhand bend with lots of tail. The 3rd rappeler is is setup with an extended rappel with an auto-block friction hitch third hand.

Sling between the simulrappers is best practice. Obviously the prusik mitigates the risk but maybe worth mentioning to your audience.

Can also add friction by simply wrapping around your waist.

Okay so have some questions here because I have never set up a repel for three. I notice that the strand on the right is ran through the chain and is tied into the second rope. I’m uncertain on what that knot is but from the angle I’m assuming it’s a square knot? I notice that climber number two and three is set up on one individual strand and the first climber is set up to repel on both strands. Once at the ground does the 1st climber just pull the rope on the left hand side that is not ran through the chain to bring the rope back down. Looks pretty simple but just want to be certain I understand this right.
