Alfie - Burt Bacharach & Hal David performed by Stacey Kent and Jim Tomlinson

Here's a song I recorded during lockdown. I'm uploading this to Youtube to mark the passing of Burt Bacharach this day, the 9th February 2023. Along with lyricist Hal David, Burt Bacharach was one of the greatest songwriters of the last century, and this song, Alfie, is among their greatest masterpieces. RIP Burt Bacharach.

quintessential Bacharach tune. vague suspended-note harmonies punctuated periodically by traditional ones, with "dreamy" dead spots... serving as transitions.

i learned to play this on the piano as a 12 yr old and surprisingly still remembered all the words and melody (didn't miss a note) as i sang along with Stacy. i'm not bragging as i don't always carry a tune all that well!

my favorite Bacharach tune by far! just lovely...

Wow. So many comments here are just spot on. Kent has a clear and simple voice reminiscent of the greatest bossa nova singers in history. It is the purity of her tone and her incredibly supple touch that are the hero elements here, but let’s not overlook the killer guitar accompaniment that brings Bacharach’s gorgeous and brilliant progressions to life. I’ve enjoyed Kent in multiple genres and languages, but never more than in this plaintive, moving song. Just wonderful. I hope I get to hear her at the MTL Jazz Festival. ❤❤❤
