I grew up watching the original Mary Poppins film with Julie Andrews. So of course I prefer it!

But Emily Blunt did an outstanding job with this role, and her performance is more accurate to the P.L. Travers book. So I really enjoy both films.

I do believe they offered Julie a cameo role in the new one (playing the Angela Lansbury role) but turned it down because she didn't want to unnecessarily overshadow Emily Blunt.

Just certain actresses were born to play a role and once it’s cemented into culture, it can never be changed. Judy Garland as Dorothy, Vivien Leigh as Scarlett, and Julie as Mary Poppins. When the stars and planets align at a certain point that the perfect marriage of actor and character meet.

I agree with Julie. Young children today probably won't watch the old Mary Poppins film so I think it's perfectly fine to reintroduce the character with a new actress. It's not as if the old film no longer exists. It'll be a generational thing where older people have Julie Andrews and younger people have Emily Blunt.
