In this episode of RIO's "How To Fly Fish" series, RIO brand manager Simon Gawesworth explains how to get more distance when fly casting - something most anglers strive for.

Simon runs through some of the basic tackle choices that can make a big difference with regard to how far a fly is cast. In addition, Simon explains and demonstrates a number of casting techniques that will improve everyone's distance.

RIO's "How To Fly Fish" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

Great Simon does such a god job breaking these concepts down to an easy to understand level. I’m also really enjoying Simon’s new second edition Single-Handed Spey Casting!

Very well done Simon. I use all of the techniques and lines you demoed here. One rule I try to always follow when long casting. No more than 3 false cast, I usually do 1 or 2 then cast.
Enjoyed your discussion very well done, thank you for sharing.

Another video of yours saved for future reference. I'd go out and practice now but it's only up to -8°F, now. I'm a wimp in my old age. Thanks.

I have a 9’ 7wt single hand rod with a mod fast action. I was going to by an outbound shirt or coastal quick shot for surf casting perch and also still water streamer fishing. They didn’t have any outbound short lines so the shop hooked me up with an outbound head and gripshooter line. This seems more like a Spey set up than a single hand set up, but I’m hoping it works out. I’m excited to give it a try.

Great video, I am going to try a double taper line on my spare 5wt. I was thinking about DT lines all wrong, I thought of them as all running line.

I agree with everyone else - terrific demos and thorough explanations on almost everything. But I'm trying to figure out how the Rio Slick Shooter can be used to my advantage on Euro nymph fishing systems. Is it simply a super smooth replacement for mono rig set-ups? Perhaps a video solely on the Rio Slick Shooter would be an idea for you.

Excellent explanations. I need to work on my double haul for sure.

OutBound Short is simply awesome fly line and my favourite along floating Single Handed Spey. OutBound Short might not be the most accurate one, but very easily gives a lot of distance when needed. Couple tight hauls and fly line just flies through rod rings. And also gives impression that I am much better caster than I really am.

I always learn something from Simon’s instructional videos. However I would like to ask about shooting line on the back cast as an additional method of gaining distance on the cast. Yes or no? Thanks.

I’m using 30 pound Hydrofloat !
40# would be better but P-line doesn’t make it. But it works and you get 150 yds for 12$ that’s 4 refills at 112 feet of running line 🎣

Sir: could you kindly explain why with a 30' head length like the Outbound Short "you can only have 30' of line outside the rod and shoot"? Why not have more line out when released? Thank you

Can the cold water Rio Outbound Short line be used in tropical water? The tropical water outbound short is very expensive for me.

If I’m using a floating shooting head, can I use the slick shooter? Is the SS a floating shooting line?
