I’m Bengali from India, and this is something we would eat at home often. I’m positively surprised to know that it made its way into Kenya as well! 🙂

We're South African, and my husband says Kenya has some of the best Indian food he has ever had.

Many of the Indian workers didn't 'come' to Kenya; they were shipped out or coerced to go work in horrific conditions. Thousands died building the railways.

Dish looks amazing, but the history is a bit more complex then what you've described.

Wow. I appreciate how you mentioned that this dish was brought to Kenya by Indians. This is our staple food. Not a delicacy. Just whole mung dal and chapati/roti.

Nice one! It's great seeing someone incorporate in the history. Many people don't bother, which usually causes misunderstandings or arguments on the origins of our Indian-influenced dishes.

Fun fact- the English word "Mung" comes from the Hindi word "Moong", which ultimately comes from the Sanskrit word for mung bean, " Mudga". Interestingly, Mung bean has its origins in India, specifically the Indian Subcontinent.

In India, we mostly call this stew as "Moong Sabji/Tarkaari" and that flatbread as "Laccha Paratha". Paratha in general means "flatbread" in Hindi. Never knew that there is any remote Indian influence in any African country, the culture is very different from India anyway.
