We may views the mercs in a comedic light due to how weird and wacky tf2 and its fan animations are but like most of valves games its a very depressing story for its characters and very few happy endings.

According to the comics, the heavy has killed government people who came looking for them-likely armed ones-with his bare hands because they came to his family.
His family has done the same after he left and I think they said they ate those ones
