If you get the chance to travel to Anyang in Hubei Province China they have excellent National Museum of Chinese Writing showing many of the Oracle Bone Characters and the subsequent evolution to modern scripts.

For me it was a great help to learn all the 部首 (radicals!) first. Now it’s much easier to remember characters, like 想 xiǎng, to think, to want, to miss, consists of the three radicals (部首) First: 木mù, wood or tree and 目 mù, the eye and 心 xīn the heart. Once you learned most of the important radicals, remembering is quite easy. Radicals like turtle 🐢 龜 gūi are quite complicated when derived from the traditional Chinese and not used very often. Funny also some radicals are composed of other, simpler radicals, like 殳 shū consist of jī, the little table and 又 yòu, which shows a hand grabbing something and means still, or again.
