The Persian War Battle of Marathon

The Athenian army, led by the general Miltiades, marched to Marathon to confront the Persians. Although the Athenians were outnumbered, they were able to form a phalanx, a tight formation of soldiers armed with spears, that was able to repel the Persian cavalry charge.
