How They Made Allura A GREAT Character

We know that fandom culture can be bad sometimes. But what about the worst of times? Voltron: Legendary Defenders was one of Netflix's greatest animated series, until it wasn't. And the reason it went downhill so fast isn't a mystery. And for once, we can't pin the blame on the studio execs or the writers.

I was so hoping for a Evil Allura from the other universe to happen

Thinking back to how much Allura was angry at Zarkon for everything that happened, I feel like part of that anger was more out of pain than hatred as well as the inability to fully grieve her loss to some degree.

This pain is not just the fact that her home is gone, her family is gone nor that her people are gone. It's the fact that the person who caused this pain was not a stranger nor originally an enemy, but a person who was a trusted friend to her father and family and at some point seemed like a family member to her.

From what we saw in the flashback history, Zarkon and Alfor were the best of friends in a way that they were somewhat brothers in all but blood. So Zarkon was most likely part of Allura's life growing up at some point as a kind of family friend or uncle.

That might be what hurts the most that Zarkon, who she once trusted the way her father did, took away everything she loved right in front of her and betrayed her, her father, her family and her people, and leaving her nearly alone with nothing.

This pain coupled with not having a chance to grieve her loss, turned her pain to distrust and resentment towards the Galra.

Now I don't think that Allura truly hated the Galra in general but who they were connected to, which became a reminder of how she lost everything and who caused it.
So when she thought of the Galra, she immediately thought of Zarkon.

This could also show in her response to Lotor's actions as to her, it was history repeating itself in a way, and the fact that Lotor's actions towards the Alteans was really messed up.

So Allura, who had given a chance to someone connected to the person who ruined her life, was betrayed again in a painful way.
I'm not sure if Allura meant it when she told Lotor that he was just like his father or it was a heat of the moment thing but she did look like wanted to take that back.

As for the show, I wish they had a scenario of Allura and Keith sparring together with Coran as the referee to test her combat skills against Keith's Blade of Marmora training.
In the middle of the training, something provokes Allura's emotions causing her to let out her frustration, pain and grief and thus breaking down in front of Keith who helps her grieve and some way let it out.

Now why would Keith be the best to comfort her you may ask?

Well, out of all the paladins, Keith is the only one who could best understand Allura's level of loss to some degree with how his childhood and life was. Keith knows what it's like to lose everything and be alone. Now, Keith may not have lost his entire home planet and people like Allura did but he did lose his father who was world before Shiro and he was alone for a long time with everyone around him telling him in some way that he wasn't good enough and as a result he didn't trust people until he met Shiro who gave him hope again, the same way having Coran and the paladins gave Allura hope again.

So even if Keith may not have all the words, he would be able to help Allura come to terms with that loss, pain, doubt and fear thus creating an understanding in the two's friendship that makes them more alike than different.

The ending they gave Allura was so unfortunate. I feel like it would have been so easy to give her (and Lotor) a truly satisfying ending where they end up together, connecting their families once more, and when the Paladins go home to their own, she's not alone anymore and has Lotor by her side (to lead if they wish) and safeguard their hard-won peace for thousands of years to come together (a fate she never could have had with Lance). They both lost their families to the war, but find a new one in each other that mends the bond that was broken between their parents and I think that would have been so beautiful, full circle ending. They both deserved better...

i still believe they should have made her black paladin, they could’ve so easily had her be the forefront of the entire movement against zarkon, it would have made shiro’s death mean something, and genuinely make SO MUCH MORE SENSE than anyone else being the black paladin after shiro. it would have changed the entire trajectory of HER ARC and the overall story, and would actually make for a compelling plot line, ugh they jus did the show so dirty. it started off so good. her & lotor BOTH deserved better AND each other ! like could you imagine ??? queen of the alteans who is also the black paladin uniting with the prince/new emperor of the galra to make a new & better generation ?? and how much of a pay off it wouldve been because they would both have direct connections to zarkon… while rejecting what he stood for & the things that represent him??? reclaiming the once good things he corrupted for their own ?? and turning it into hope and unity for the rest of the universe ?? they fumbled so hard.
